I agree with this - that 3,800 lb rear axle is light. I wish Toyota would have upped this truck to compete with the Titan XD and the Ford F-150 HDPP. Or at least use a 4,500lb capacity rear axle.

164.6 is only 4.4 less than my 19 Ram 3500 CC LB. Thats one long Tundra. Problem is the CCC will be even lower.
Looks like all Toyota did was polish a !urd.

I had high hopes that they would at least attempt to get the payload close to the competitors.

I would guess that the second lowest trim level (SR5) with crew cab 4x4 short bed option may end up having a payload close to most other manufacturer's with Limited level trim packages.

But nothing is going to fix that rear axle capacity....

2022 Tundra - looks interesting

Manufacturers are on a mission to remove as much weight as possible on these 1/2 ton trucks. Lighter, faster, and better mpg’s, and overall ride. Regardless of how much payload a truck has, when you do this only so much of that payload can be hanging out the back end, or stability will suffer.

If your looking for a 1/2 ton that will be used to tow more often than not, you have three options, Chevy/GMC with the 6.2, and the Ram with the 5.7. Both of these are heavy cast iron blocks that have, and can be used in HD trucks. Third option is the Titan XD. Ford should offer the 6.2 Boss in the F150 HDPP.

Our truck now has 57k total miles, with 32k of that towing our trailer. Some say that much towing puts me in the HD truck segment, and my truck will suffer longevity issues. If they keep going this direction, more people will be forced to move up to a HD, and can already see that happening.

Don't forget the Ram and GM 3.0 liter diesels. If youre going to tow a lot this is whst you want.

I had a diesel so - been there and done that. Would I consider getting a little diesel, No. Would I consider getting the bigger 250/2500 diesel, sure.

I have studied them and read many a review. I like everything about em except the lower payload. a laramie 4x4 ccsb that I would get only has 1300# payload. a better buy would be the 1500 silverado 3.0 dsl. good payload and the benefit of smooth inline 6. the chevy interior is lacking and for some reason it's hard to find a dsl 1500 chevy without the bench front seat and with nav and a good stereo. I know, not needed for towing but nice to have while putt putting along for miles with a trailer in tow.

I have satellite radio which is really great on long trips so I agree with getting a good radio. I am just not a fan of the little diesel engines that to me seem underpowered.

And why buy the complexity of a small diesel when the Ford Eco-Boost and now the Tundra will tow like a diesel.

Now if I need a 1,000 ft. lbs. of torque I would consider the bigger diesel engines.

I have both a 3.0 liter Mercedes diesel and a Cummins 6.7 liter. The MB feels like it has almost as much torque and power as the Cummins. It is smooth and quiet and gets much better MPG. It can easily tow a 7000 trailer. I once compared it to Ford's 3.0 liter diesel and there was no contest. Maybe that is why Ford got rid of their F-150 diesel. Small is not necessarily bad. It's a perfect engine for a half ton truck.

I think the small diesel engines are not much better than a gas engine until you need crazy torque of the bigger diesels. They still use DEF and right there is one issue. And you never know when all those little diesel engines like Volkswagen.

Buddy was told a while back he had carbon build up on his Ecoboost because he put a lift kit, and larger tires on his truck? He had acceleration and stumbling issues. Wouldn’t say what the dealer charged him to fix it. This was after many attempts, and replaced parts from his local shop.

To say an Eco-Boost is not complex, or not as complex as a diesel is incorrect. They have many complex problems that leave you left with the dealership for repairs. Would never purchase one of these trucks used.

The advantage of a small diesel over a V8-V6 is better mpg. Ram 1500 3.0 Eco D gets close to 28-30 mpg. Where I live diesel and reg run neck and neck in price.
It's not like you have to recoup the cost but you do get a lot more distance out of a tank.
