2023 Silverado rumors 500+ hp

Seen a video on YouTube 2023 Duramax is going to be 500+hp. Not seen anything from gm confirming it

That will cause Ram and Ford to up their game if this is true. I drove a Ford 6.7 generation one truck with 400HP and 800 ft. lbs. of torque. That was plenty for what I wanted to do. Now in 2022 I believe the 6.7 diesel has 475HP and 1050 ft. lbs.of torque. I think Ram is close.

I would like to see 500 hp and 1,100 ft lbs of torque. Or even 1,200ft. lbs of torque. If diesel fuel is $7.00/gallon might as well put it to work.

I’m not exactly sure fuel consumption would go down. I’ve towed the same rv with a 2017 RAM w/ 900 ft lbs and now a 2020 with 1000. Can’t tell a discernible difference towing , but the ‘17 got about 1.5 mpg better. They both suck DEF.

I have been researching this for 3 months and following everything I could find on the 2023 GMC/ Chevy’s. Rumors were they were going to up the HP and finally put in the 10 speed transmission. Unfortunately it looks like there will be no changes whatsoever for 2023. I am now going to order a Ford F-350 with the 7.3L and 10 speed trans.

At some point it's more about marketing and one-upmanship than it is about having enough power to tow. Unless you are towing some 18,000 lb, triple axle 5th wheel, I can't see why anyone needs more than 700 - 800 ft lbs.

2 cents,
Dave

I test drove a SRW 2021 F-250 6.7 diesel with the advertised 1050 ft. lbs. of torque and turning to take a ramp onto the freeway I broke the rear tire loose. I thought no more power needed on this SRW truck. Yikes - moving slowly and trying to accelerate the way I normally do broke that tire loose.

I cant recall the exact numbers but my 17 ram 3500 dually is factory detuned because of the manual transmission
IIRC it's something like 350hp and 650 torque.
I pull an 11k gvwr trailer and maybe 1000 lbs of
Stuf in the truck. I have never felt underpowered on any western range we've crossed ..So yes it's the same 6.7 cummins as the 1000 ft lb HO just detuned. I guess it's just a matter of oneupmanship with the big 3..
Everyone buys the same diesel fuel
.

That's the direction I am leaning as well. If I ever get permission to buy a new truck it will be the F-350/7.3L/4.10 gears. No oil burning BS.

From everything that I have researched the HO is more than just a tune. Here is the grocery list:

"This new engine starts with a new engine block, made from compacted graphite iron. This material is more durable than a traditional iron, so this new diesel mill has less material, thus being lighter without any compromise in durability. That new block houses a revised rotating assembly that features new, low-friction pistons, stronger connecting rods, a stronger crankshaft and bearings that will handle the extreme temperatures and combustion loads of a diesel engine making 1,000 lb-ft of torque. On the bottom end, the oil pump and water pump systems have both been revised to keep everything running cool and smooth. On the top end of the engine, the engineers have added a new cylinder head design with new exhaust valves, new rocker arms and a new fuel system that operates at 29,000 pounds-per square inch; providing plenty of fuel pressure for the boost needed to create monster torque. There is also a new exhaust manifold and a new variable-geometry turbocharger that provides 33 pounds of boost in the high output engine."

I was really considering getting one but I settled for the SO. I didn't want to sacrifice mpg for an engine I really didn't need yet. Now if we ever upgrade our 5th wheel then I might just make that jump.

I am pulling a 16,000 toy hauler with a 2022 Chev Duramax. 445 HP and 920 torque coupled with the 10 speed is all the power needed and then some. Anything more is just "my dick is bigger than yours". The Ford already has that power and it made a 1 minute difference over GM and Ram pulling 30,000 up the 8 mile Ike Gauntlet.

You might be right; I haven't been following new diesel development for years......but it's not uncommon for marketing to take liberties; I wouldn't be surprised if the changes noted were made to all 6.7's, not just the HO ones. It's kinda hard to believe that they would have two completely different engines being made at the same time, particularly the block.

edit; google suggests that pre-2019, the only difference was programming. Post 2019 there seems to be some hardware changes (injectors, turbo, etc.) but all 6.7's get the new CGI block as I suspected.

For those wondering, the standard 6.7-liter also received many of the new features of the high output engine, including the engine block, the cylinder head, the cooling system, the oiling system and the turbocharger, although the stronger engine has a unique calibration with more boost and less cylinder compression to reach the big torque levels.

Fyi - Ford has been using that type of engine material since 2011. Good to see Cummins/Ram catching up.

I currently have a 2019 Ram 3500 flatbed and since it’s a cab & chassis it’s de tuned from factory I think it’s 360 hp
I’ve never needed more power with it and as others have mentioned it’s just a bragging contest MINE IS BIGGER THAN YOURS
Now my dump trucks??? One is 190hp other is 235hp that is where I could use some more HP 🥴
