The 6.5 years before I bought the F-250 I had a 5th wheel and a 2012 F-450.

I stuck with Ford because the F-450 gave me zero problems.

My old 2012 dually truck had a cargo capacity of 4,500 lbs. My gas F-250 has a cargo capacity of 3,500lbs. Actually 3,497.

And FYI - most diesel F-250's have a cargo capacity of 2,500 - 2,800lbs. That is not enough to tow any 5th wheels in reality. A F-350 typically has 1,500 lbs more cargo capacity than the F-250 and a F-350 is really needed to tow small to mid-sized 5th wheels.

What I would do if I were you.

I would tow that trailer with my little 2.7 Eco-Boost F-150. Get some camping and towing experience. By then maybe new redesigned 2020 trucks will be available. From what I read.

New redesigned GM trucks June/July
New redesigned Ram trucks Sept/Oct
New redesigned Ford trucks Nov/Dec

To me, the redesigned trucks will be like the previous generation with each nut and bolt tightened another 1/2 turn. Each generation of truck has had noticable improvements in capability and power.
GM will have a new 6.6 litre gas engine and Ford a new 7.3 litre gas engine. Ford and Ram will have more powerful diesel engines. GM had a more powerful diesel engine either in 2018 or current 2500/3500 trucks. I expect to see imporvements in the frames to make them even better. In 2012 I thought they could not make better trucks...but I was way wrong.

Point being - IMHO it would be worth waiting to see the new 2020 trucks.
Thanks. Makes sense. I am shopping F250s and if I don't get a killer deal (so far, I have not) I might do just what you suggest. One problem is I will not buy a GM product - I owned a 09 Sierra 5.3 that had the AFM issue. Never again.

I know this thread is 2 months old but I'll post here for any future readers.
2015+ F150's came with light duty (LD) or heavy duty (HD) frames. Frame thickness has nothing to do with engine size. The LD is .087" thick and the HD is .1" thick. I do not believe any 4x4 F150 ever came with a LD frame but who knows. Actually... good luck even finding a LD frame.

I currently pull a 26 foot 8K GVWR Jayco Octane toy hauler with my 2.7 equipped f150. It has a 6 speed and 3:55s. I am constantly amazed just how well this truck handles this trailer.
That being said... I am hoping to buy a gas F350 when the new 7.3 gasser hits the market. I want that truck to pull a 15K 5er toy hauler.
If I were going out to buy a truck to specifically haul a big trailer, I would go as big as practical, but I wouldn't sell the f150 short without giving it a try first.
Hopefully this helps someone down the road.
