The economy is crazy right now. I ordered a bicycle online for $1100 about 6 months ago from one of those direct to consumer bicyle companies, same bike is now listed for $1400. Hallmark and Scout are both increasing prices due to material costs, (probably most camper builders too). Just out of curiosity, I've checked how much I could sell my 2018 Toyota for and I could literally get what I paid for it new.

And there are way less decently equipped 1 ton trucks around. Unfortunately I just had a major incident with my wife’s new car so I think I stopped looking to change mine again. But either way. From July to now the market is more expensive with less offerings. The fact remains that a 3/4 ton truck is close to 11k less than a 1 ton Diesel and nearly 20k less than a gas model.

Take a look at RAM prices 1500, 2500, 3500 single rear axles 6.4L gas.
I think you might find the as far as cost 2500, 3500, 1500 highest to lowest. The biggest determinate of price is the trim.
You can get a lower price on a low trim 3500 vs a high trim 1500.
I'm not talking about MSRP

That's sticker leaving the factory. I've been doing a lot of dump runs lately in preparation for selling our house and I've got a lot of real world numbers. It's usually between 7200-7300# tare weight depending on how full the gas tank is. After the factory I added nerf bars and a fabric bed cover. I roll through the dump with a piece of 3/4" plywood to protect the bed. I'm 220# and I don't think a 150# driver is added to payload but someone correct me if I'm wrong. There's probably 50# of other misc. crap in my truck at any given time.

Base MSRP is what you go buy. Not the price the dealer has it jacked up to.

That even sounds a bit high, as going from a SRW 3500 to DRW is only a about $1,300.

ardvark16 once we put something out in a public forum, you just have to let the cards fall where they may. Pull the pertinent info out and flow by the other stuff.
Everyone has opinions, everyone thinks they are right. Some people are reasonable, and others are not.
I have learned in life that if I show people where i tie up my goat, there will be a few that will enjoy playing with it.

Just bought my "retirement" truck. I went with a F350 for the reason you state. Though my current trailer is pretty small, I want to have options as the years come on, one of which is a truck camper.

Decent used 3/4 and 1T trucks are hot sellers. Around here a lot of businesses want them because they need them and cant afford to buy them new.
The difference between a Supercrew F250 and an F350 is $1525.
I wouldnt buy one off the lot because they run up the price with a bunch of useless add-ons that I dont need or want, like a power moonroof or sliding rear window.
A 2021 f350 SRW, 8' bed, 4X4 6.7/10spd, with the STX and power equip packages, 5th wheel prep, BLIS, boxlink, cargo bed lights, sync, sirius, tow mirrors, running boards, heavy duty springs and a rear sway bar runs right at 60k.
An XLT or Lariet gets more creature comforts but not worth the extra money IMO.

After watching the commercial where a couple with a Platinum F150 backs an Airstream into a spot using the dial on the dash, I commented to my wife at how much money they spent on those two items.
I then went to Fords build site and built out a 2021 F150 Platinum adding what I figure most would add. It came out to over $76,000 USD.
Guessing the AS was $70-80,000.

A new GM 2500 HD with the 6.6 gas engine will have an over 3,000lb payload. The 2500 HD diesel trucks are right at a 3,000lb payload.
A Ford F-250 with a gas engine will be over 3,000lbs I think.
I don't know about Ram but they are probably about the same. A 6.4 gas engined 2500 will be over 3,000lbs.

maybe a tradesman but a 2500 ram laramie with dsl has only 2100#. my son recently bought one and has already added air bags to firm it up when pulling his 5th wheel.

Out of curiosity I just check the KBB value of my truck - 2014 Ram 6.4 Hemi Outdoorsman (Similar to an SLT or Bighorn - kind of mid-level). 29K-32K trade-in vs. private party. Paid 37K.... 7 YEARS AND 107K AGO!!!! Never thought a truck would be an investment... LOL. Maybe if I hold into it for another 5 years it will appreciate to what I paid for it! Crazy times for sure.

My 2012 diesel truck only lost 1/3 of it's value in 6.5 years. That was at a dealship when I traded it. I think most vehicles will loose over 1/2 their value in just 5 years.
That is why I say the $10,000 upcharge for a diesel engine only cost $3,000 because you will get most of that $$$ back when you sell it.
I traded a truck when I bought the 2012. I remember that truck seemed to hold it value much better than average. It was a F-150.
