5th wheel max towing

I am new to all of this , so please bare with me.... I have not yet bought my 5th wheel or truck... max towing limits for truck give a specific number.... But, it says towing limit for towing a 5th wheel is higher..... How do i find out how much higher it is to tow a 5th wheel vrs. regular towing......dartmastersteve@yahoo.com

Find the 5er you want, find the GVWR then take 20% of that number that will be your pin weight and possibly more up to 25%. Most all of that weight will go onto your trucks rear axle.

Find that info come back and there will be plenty of advice as to what truck to buy.

Just don't let the sales guy tell you a 250/2500 will tow anything!

Trailer Life has yearly towing guides, on line, that you can look up what the 5th wheel tow rating of a given truck is. Generally, the newer the truck the higher the tow rating is. An F-250 or 2500HD, with a diesel, should handle most 5th wheels just fine. Or, if you're buying new, an F-350 or 3500HD doesn't cost much more than a F-250 and really up your towing ability.

Here is a rough guide:

You need to know how much weight a truck can carry. Here are rough weights of the trucks.
You can find this on the door sticker. (These numbers are for Ford's but are similar to Chevy and Ram)

3/4 ton truck weighs 7,700 lbs. With a combined gross weight up to 10,000 lbs.

1 ton single rear wheel (SRW) truck weighs 8,000 with a combined gross weight of 11,500 lbs.

A dually truck (DRW) weighs
8,800 lbs with a combined gross weight of 13,300.

You can take the weight of the truck. Add people, hitch (150 lbs.) tools, dog etc. The difference between that weight and the combined gross weight is how much additional weight you can carry.

In a nut shell:

250/2500 - can tow the smaller, lighter 5th wheels

350/3500 - can tow mid size 5th wheels.

350/3500 Dual Rear Wheels - can tow the large heavy 5th wheels.

Gross Combined Weight Ratings for the Dual Rear Wheel trucks can reach as high as 37500 to 38,000 lbs when properly equipped and correct axle ratio's are met... My 2014 is a 30K rated truck, but do not let a salesman tell you that a 3/4 ton SRW will pull anything to make a sale!

Here is a good chart for the 3500 SRW/DRW RAM's for 2015. 2016 #'s are higher.
