5th wheel to gooseneck adapter damage?

Hey y'all, it's me again with another rookie question.

If I'm interested in a preowned 5th wheel that has been towed with a gooseneck adapter other than Goosebox or Gene, or even those too, what potential damage should I look for? Buckling near the pin box area? Something else?

I'd be looking for signs of frame cracking all the way back to the main structure of the trailer, as well as buckling and anything else that "just doesn't seem right". IMHO... look at how a gooseneck trailer is constructed in the hitch area and then look at how a 5th wheel is. I am not a fan of gooseneck adapters.

Some trailer manufactures do not recommend towing thier 5th wheels with gooseneck adapters. Check with the manufacturer of the unit you're interested in to see what they say.
Otherwise, do as posted above; check for frame cracking, buckling, bulging, etc. Check the interior and exterior, sidewall, caps, etc.

Place a piece of tape vertically on front cab above pin box
Use a ruler and measure up the piece of tape from top of pin box and place a 'reference mark'
*static/unhitched

Then hitch up and measure from top of pin box to that reference mark
Difference more then 1/4"....pin box structure damage is suspect
*1/4' was reference number given to me years ago by my 5th wheel RV MFG.

Look for stress indicators on sidewalls or overhang.
Heavy caulking, cracks, broken trim screws
Watch for front cap movement when hitching and weight is transferred from front landing gear to pin box

Gooseneck 'adapters' can place heavy stress on pin box mounting structure/frame rails, bracing and welds
*Visual inspection would require removal of cover piece around pin box

A Goosebox or Gen-Y is not going to cause damage to a fifth wheel. I wouldn't be concerned with buying a pre-owned one that has either of those installed.

However, gooseneck "adapters" are a different story. They can cause significant damage over time. Old-Biscuit said it best, and if you're considering one I would perform the test he mentioned.

ALL RV frame manufacturers prohibit use of an adapter and will void any frame warranty. Lippert (frame mfg on the majority of fifth wheels) will support the Reese Goosebox. They won't say much about a Gen-Y, but likely because Lippert now owns the Goosebox.

i took a way simpler route with the adapters, if its got anything other than a goosebox or gen y, i wont look at it. lippert makes paper thin frames that are barely adequate under normal conditions. throw in something like a gooseneck adapter, i wouldnt trust it.
