Advice on Ford F350 DRW

Afternoon everyone,

Wife and I are looking to get a used F350. We're looking at an '06 Power Stroke 6.0L V8 King Ranch with 100,000 miles and an '08 Power Stroke 6.4L V8 Lariat with 126,000 miles on it. Both seem pretty similar to me, just wondering if anyone has had any experience with either of these years or which may be better/worse, or if either is great! Thank you very much!

I'm a Ford guy but after having a 03 & 05 6.0l diesels I can't recommend any 6.0l. Now my 2012 6.7 Ford diesel is great.

There was not a 6.0L in the '08s--only from '03 to 07. 6.4L from '08 to '10; 6.7L thereafter.
Both 6.0 and 6.4 have had numerous problems, but the 6.0 is way cheaper to fix. I would try real hard to find what you need in a '12 and up, if you want a Ford. The '11s were the first year for the 6.7L and '12-up is better.
I have had 2 6.0s and 2 6.4s--all have had probs after 100k.

The 6.0 is scary and the 6.4 you should run like hell away from. But my last 2014 6.7 was strong as could be. I think the 2012 versions of the 6.4 (first year, I think 2012 is right) had some turbo issues but I don't think the later ones have any issues to worry about.

Meant to say 6.4L '08, thank you!

Thanks for all of the feedback, I had thought Ford had some bad years with the 6.0L, but was hoping maybe the 6.4L was better, will continue looking!

First year of the 6.7l Ford diesel was 2011. I have just over 61K on my 2012 & most of those miles have been towing.

So follow up question, should I look at a Ram 3500 instead, have plenty of those in the area as well, just not looking to break the bank as will primarily will be used for towing.

What are you towing (size/weight), when& how often.. .?? I looked for months and was told numerous time no To 6.0 or 6.4 if I couldn't afford engine repair!! Was told 6.7 after Nov. 11' build date are best yet-- well, I was scared of diesel repair and upfront cost & only tow 10-15x a year under #10000 lbs.... Bought a 15' 6.2 gasser and LOVE it!!!

If you tow flat and under 10k.... I'd personally go gas -- if 5th wheel and lots of travels, 2012+ Ford or 2014+ Dodge

(All opinion and input from my own research)

We're getting the Jayco North Point 375BHS which is a significant upgrade to the popup we've been using here and there! We've picked it out, but won't be getting it until end of summer and looking for the best truck to pull it with. We'll be pulling it as much as can be allowed, however, I'm in the military, so it'll be a lot of weekend trips, rather than long trips. But the thing will be around 19000 lbs fully loaded and it's 42' long, so definitely looking for a diesel and dually.

Test drove the 6.0L just to get a feel for it (driven plenty of Ram 3500's) I felt it drove extremely hard and felt like I was driving a boat. Wasn't too impressed with how it felt, but it's also 13 years old, so I guess it was kind of expected. I just need to up my budget and look for something newer. Thanks everyone!

I have all three brands and I must say that the Duramax/Allison combination was the least problematic. My Ram issues were all transmission related but I understand the Aisin trans has resolved that. The Fords were the worst in reliability and I will never buy another one.
Good luck in your search.

We had 2 Ford 6.0 trucks at work, an '03 and an '06. Both were problematic with numerous expensive repairs. I didn't care for the way they handled either, the steering felt sloppy.
I've personally owned '01, '02, '05, and '07 Chevy work trucks. I've had the 8.1L, the 6.0L gas, and two Duramax trucks. They have all given me excellent service. I don't put up with machines that don't work well and perform well. If the first Chevy hadn't been solid I wouldn't have owned another, and another. The '05 currently has 217,000 miles on it and has been the most trouble free vehicle I've ever owned.
