Total garbage. The idea of having an air filter is to prevent dirt from entering the engine and causing wear. See this test, and if you still want to use the garbage, at least you will be informed. K&N Air Filter Review - Debunking the Myths (and why OEM is better)

Volant has a option for the Donaldson power core filter which is a dry filter.

I have used k&n and volant with the oil filter and have yet to have any issues.

Also AEM makes a drop in filter which does not use oil called DryFlo.

I used one in a tow vehicle and have to say I was pleased.
Is it worth it?
Several arguments

The majore "Anti" K&N I hear is the filter is not effective against super fine "Dust" and "Grit" the Factory filter has smaller "Poors" and thus will stop finer Grit.

I saw no evidence of "Grit" getting past the K&N
and my brother who was for a while a Dirt Biker, and who used K&N also said neither he nor any of his buddies found any evidence of it.

But.. that does not mean the argument is not valid. More study needed unless you are Lilly Corporation (Long story I* do not wish to get into)

I'd need to see at least a thosuand users tear down their engines and inspectm, all selected at random..

The K&N uses two methods to block crud from getting in, I think the "Back up" method is catching the finer grit,, but... I've not the hardware to test it with or at least not that I care to risk.

I think the problem of very fine dust getting by the filter is because of people running excessive boost! May be deforming the filter just enough to suck in very fine dust. Big boost is a lot of air movement. Just a thought. Under normal use, they are great. 5 vehicles with them and no complaints or problems! But I could be wrong!

K&N is a solution to a problem that really doesn't exist.

This is an excellent article about K&N vs OEM filters. Graphs, charts, data.
