Andersen Hitch Rotating

I have an Andersen Ultimate 5th Wheel Hitch - Gooseneck Mount. The dealership where I bought my 5er and the hitch installed it square with the pickup bed, but now I see that it has rotated some 5 or 10 degrees about the gooseneck ball.

I watched the technician install it and torque the bolts to specification.

I have not towed much - maybe 80 miles. I have a spray in bed liner.

Is this rotation normal? Is it something to be concerned about?

I would be concerned about that. I could be wrong but it sounds like something has come loose or has shifted.

Get a horse trailer floor mat, cut it to fit the hitch and put it between the hitch and bed. Put the trailer on the hitch for weight and torque the bolt to 60#. Anderson makes a pad just for this, but it is 89.00. A 4x6 horse trailer floor mat is about 49.00 and it will make two pads.

Andersen suggested a 1/4_inch rubber pad under the hitch. The rep did not say this was a problem, but suggested the pad.

Sounds like the horse trailer pad is the right thing.

I think that should read 3/4 inch.

I looked again at the email from Andersen, and it does say 1/4”. I asked for clarification, so, we’ll see what they say.

Andersen did not tell me the thickness. They just sent me a link to their product, which shows width and length but not thickness.

I did get some 1/4” rubber pad - dense stuff for horse trailers.

I just got the Andersen hitch but the only time I could tow with it was from the RV dealer to home, then return for repairs. I've read a few posts saying the hitch is prone to rotating but not many.
I also have a spray in bed liner. It's similar to the Linex but a bit different. It does have a texture like sandpaper like the Linex but not quite as gritty.

I was wondering if spraying some non-skid paint or adding some stick-on non-skid tape on the bottom of the hitch would help to prevent any rotation without having to buy or deal with a stall mat.

I checked with Andersen and they said the pad they sell was 1/4'', but that any rubber pad should work. They did say that 3/4'' might make it harder to get the hitch to attach to the ball. I'm going to try the 3/4'' horse trailer mat because it is so cheap. If it doesn't work I'll just get the Andersen pad if I can't find something that is thinner elsewhere.

My local farm and ranch store has 4-ft-wide rubber stall pad for sale by the foot, in 1/4”, 3/8”, and 3/4” thicknesses. 1/4” thick is $5.99 per linear foot.

I cut it to size with a utility knife.

I'm a weirdo and have a bed mat on top of my Linex. Keeps everything from sliding around. It's 3/4" thick. Make sure you retorque the bolts after hooking up. I set mine to 60 ft lbs before hooking up and the darn top nut could be turned by hand after I plopped 2200 lbs on the hitch. Maybe my bed mat is too squishy.

I also went to the hardware store and got a longer grade 8 center bolt. I felt the stock bolt did not have enough thread catching because of the added thickness of the bed mat and Linex.

I do have a question, if I may. I have the Andersen adaptor rotated aft (moves the 5er forward). I also have a Flex Aire pin box. Once the 5er is hooked up, the Andersen adapter covers up the bolt and I cannot get torque wrench on the bolt. So I just use my well calibrated arm and put what I think is 60 ft lbs on the bolt with a flat wrench. I'm not sure if that is good enough, so how do I torque a bolt that I cannot get a socket on?

I think I have over-tightened mine. My wrench was not giving me a definitive “click”.

The 1/4” rubber stall pad seems to work. Just came back from a trip, and no visible movement.

With sales tax the pad cost about $26, and I have a little bit of leftover material.
