Attempting to match truck with TT

I'm new to this site and about to purchase a 2017 5.3L V8 GMC Sierra 4WD (GVWR 7200 lbs) and combined weight of cargo etc. 1516 lbs. Also plan to purchase weight distribution hitch & sway bars. The travel trailer we are looking at is the Rockwood Lite Travel Trailer model 2514S (25' 10") dry weight 5879 lbs-hitch weight 585 lbs. Now my question is will this truck handle this trailer? We only plan to travel in the SE USA such as Panama city, Gatlinburg and river runs occasionally. I can't afford to move up in truck to a 2500 at this time. (maybe that will be a retirement gift to myself)
Until now we only tent camped. I've pulled boats and driven tractor trailers before so I'm not worried about the skills just the towing ability. Any advise would be appreciated!

Going from a tent to a travel trailer is great. I remember having running hot water and staying dry in the rain as the two big advantages.

Oh, the TV and Radio and stove and bed were also a big improvement.

Lol - not to mention the critters out side your tent when in a trailer they were not inches from your head.

Are you married to Chevy? I ask this because their might be better trucks to tow that trailer. The GM 5.3 litre engine is the weak link in that truck compared to Ram and Ford.

I towed a Gulfstream Streamlite 22SLB that weighed about 5,500lbs wet and was 26.5' long with a 2011 F-150 Lariat 5.0 litre with a Drawtite WD hitch. That combo was great with no sway or affect from semi trucks. I towed about 72 mph. So I believe a 2017 Chevy 1500 would tow the Rockwood about the same if you pack normal.

Good input here. Is it just you in the truck? Do you plan to bring bikes, firewood, genset, gas, dog fence, chairs, etc... in the bed of the truck?

Personally, I would tow that combo with a good WDH. I would get CAT scale weights to make sure I was within the truck's GVWR and RAWR. Then I would enjoy the heck out of it.

I doubt you will ever carry the CCC of 1700 pounds. You seem to be aware of the towing issues, and will most likely pack on the light side. Payload can be the limit you hit first though. List what goes into the truck and add the tongue weight, see where you are.
Most here will agree that keeping both tow and payload under 80% of capacity is a good idea.

Thank you for your input. I've decided through more research and your input to reconsider purchasing this truck. Since I work from home 98% of he time I thinking about moving to a 2500 series truck (mainly to drive only to pull camper). I believe a GMC/Chevrolet/Dodge 2500 gasoline should pull much easier. So back to search! Thanks

....very wise IMO; if the truck's main (and only) job is to pull that trailer, a 3/4 ton will do a much better job and you won't need to worry about every lb you load on. ... a bit of a no-brainer IMO

You need a bigger truck. One of my best friends has a 2109S and tried towing with a 5.3. Didn't do that long! And a 2109S is a lot lighter and smaller than the TT you are looking at.

That trailer you are looking at is heavier than mine, and I tried towing mine once with a 1/2 ton... nope.

Id be listening to Old Biscuit.
Even if you squeaked by on GVWR, chances are youd go over on RAWR with the Chevy. And thats with a good WDH. Im in a constant struggle with that, and the only way to get under is to move all the heavy stuff into the pass thru, put some weight over the tt axles, and dump the dw at the first rest stop.

Ok - here goes my spill for a Nissan Titan XD or a F-150 with the HDPP option. Both these muscled up trucks could tow that trailer easy. The rear axle weight rating on the Ford HDPP is 4,800 and the Nissan XD is 4,900lbs. Both have a thicker frame and longer wheelbase.

There is no need to go any bigger for that trailer then the trucks mentioned above.

The Ford will be much harder to find and you might have to travel to get it. The Nissan a little more easy to find.

I thought most 1/2 tons were good for about 10k? That Chevy 5.3 can't pull 7,500lbs?

...depends what you mean by "good" but no.....my line in the sand is closer to 6,000 lbs with my half tons. 10,000 lbs is well into 3/4 ton territory IMO and you almost always run out of payload before reaching GCWR.

Tow rating for 2020 Silverado with a 5.3L is just under 10K. I have said before, I am towing a trailer rated dry at just under 6K, and I doubt I put 1000 pounds of gear on board, do not haul water. I would not haul anything more than my TT, granted, length plays a part in that. However, I am not sure there are many 32 foot long trailers that come in under 6K dry weight to begin with.

I agree, if you are closing in on 10K, you are looking at 3/4 or 1 ton territory.
