There are lots pulling even more than 8000. They are typically good for 7000-7600 lbs. They will out-tow a half ton truck. But you're right. If you want to safely tow a 7000- 8000 lb trailer you should have at least a 3/4 ton truck.

I have never seen one. "Lots" is a gross exaggeration at best. There are lots of Ford Expeditions and Excursions. There are lots of Suburbans and Tahoes. There are not lots of Mercedes', BMWs, Porsches, VW Touregs, or Audis pulling anything. Some...not lots.

I don't know where you live, but they are few and far between up here. For the price of one those luxo-euro SUVs you can buy a nice domestic 1/2 ton pickup and a sedan, both of which are better suited to the tasks they are made for.
When I have one of those Euro SUVs on a lift I can't help but wonder WHY anyone would try to pull a heavy load with them. Heavy to me would be over 3500 lbs. I doubt many have that much payload anyway.

They have inflated towing capacities... just like what’s currently coming out of Detroit and Japan.

I’d have one of these to tow with, but they seem super hard to find in good shape with leather etc

The key to remember with the Europeans is they have significantly lower speed limits when towing.
Here in the US, if the truck is rated for 10,000lbs, We (Americans) expect to tow 10,000lbs. In 110F heat. Uphill, through Las Vegas, while towing at 75mph.
Many European/commonwealth countries limit towing speeds to significantly lower speeds....so you see surprisingly large trailers behind smaller cars (lots of people tow with cars in the EU)....but they are only doing 80-85km/h or 55mph......and they certainly aren't doing it in the kind of heat we have...

Towed my 8500 lb Prowler and family of 6 with an ‘01 Excursion XL 4X4 V10 like a beast. Only gripe was that I needed to upgrade suspension. I did Rancho-shocks and steering stabilizer. In ‘07 when the new Suburban design came out, I test drove and bought the 2500 LT, never regretted it. The Ford V10 had a bit more guts, and some extra interior space, but to me was a-bit loose and slammy front end with those leafs. The Chevy was tighter and quieter. Pulled the same TT till kids were done being with DW and me. In ‘15 as empty nesters she said “now we can Motorhome”, ironically I’ve been in a Ford class A with ‘07 V10 and leafy front axle, towing a Forester the last 5 years, go figure.

Yeah we scored a good one! Low miles, leather and what not. We have since put tires, fender flares, a little suspension work, tow mirrors. We love it. I will never go back to anything smaller
