It wasn't the Sterling 10.5" axle that had the recall, it was the Dana M275 which had an engineering change to the axle tubes resulting in 12 documented failures, 4 of which had driveshaft separation. The M275 is the heavy duty axle option vs. the Sterling 10.5 and is used with the diesel engine or with the 7.3 gas and 4.30 gear option (all Tremors). The M275 is rated by Ford at 7,230 lbs and I believe the Sterling is rated at the same. The M275 with these "variable thickness" axle tubes were used from August 6th, 2020 to May 15th, 2021. All M275's built before or after these dates were unaffected and Ford decided that only the 6.7 Diesel had enough torque to damage the tubes so the gas trucks using that axle never got the recall. For those that showed no damage, there was a weld repair procedure, those that showed damage were replaced with rear ends using the revised axle tubes.

I had one of those trucks with the affected axle. My 6.7 was not able to put out enough torque to tear the axle tube. I had the truck coupled to a 30,000 lb gooseneck trailer when the trailer’s tandem duels sunk into the sod. I was ramming and tugging back and forth till I finally got the trailer out. When I sold the truck the axle recall had still not been done and looked 100%.

At some point I wasn't paying attention. We were talking about another axle (M275) and some people kept speaking about this one. To be honest, it didn't ring a bell, and it's because it's an old design I don't deal with.

My point was that I am leery of axle manufacturer specs when things can and likely will be added later in the process. Specs and pics are not easy to come by.

Hi Everyone, OP here. I reweighed the truck yesterday after taking out the firewood, propane, and firepit. Filled up. This weight is without my wife and of course the snack box. Maybe would need to add 160 pounds.

1st weight with firewood, propane, firepit, 3/4 tank fuel.
Steer: 4920
Drive: 3800
Gross: 8720

2nd weight of truck empty (no wife) and tank full:
Steer: 4780
Drive: 3480
Total: 8260

The truck is lighter by 460 pounds! Sounds like quite a bit. With a current pin weight of 3600 pounds, plus 160 pounds for the wife, it looks like I would be under the axel and tire weight rating. Granted, not by much. I now know that I should travel without firewood and the extra stuff in the bed of the truck.

Still sounds like I need a bigger truck. I don't want to be traveling right at the max ratings of the truck. Will keep researching.
