Ill put in .02. You guys overloaded with headlight pointed to be sky lights be aware. Some states ive mentioned this a few times. Are weighing RV. Not at the DOT scale house where the trucks go. But a visibly overloaded vehicle will get you tickets in the 1000's of dollars. Seen one as high as 12k. No Joke no BS. They are realizing a cash generating area. Wont be long and more states will do it. There not concerned overall GVW. There weighing axles. Looking at Axle weight ratings on door jamb stickers. Ask my neighbor and his 3k ticket for being over on his 36' DRV and 350 SRW. His plug fell out and had no lights. Pulled over for that and he was put on the scales as well. $3,130 bucks later he was on his way. And they have discretion they can demand via impound you get legal ( have a capable truck come and move the 5th wheel or trailer etc) They let him return to park. Or you go buy more truck. Long story short he went and bought a 450 Chassis cab a few days later. Truck camper was the other nasty fine i seen. A Mammoth on a 350 SRW.

Believe it or not. I dont care but be careful. A 3k ticket will ruin a road trip in certain state. Oh fight it court you say LOL LOL he did the judge reduced fine 1/2% like $31.00. Add in court cost and he actually paid more then the original fine.

Dont allow the officer to look at the door jamb...lol lol here comes the game warden. Suspicion of contraband. No warrant needed. Rip everything out of the RV the truck. Lay it all out on the ground side of the highway. Get a look at the door jamb. Put it all back then weigh your overloaded vehicle and give you a healthy fine. Most common things to avoid or lower fines arent working.. Be careful.

There learning through weighing whats overloaded and whats not. Certain trucks and 5th wheel they know looking at it. Is it pricey yeah. Is it getting folks to be safe and compliant yep. Fine away i say. I got weighed last time out. My truck dont squat but i was pulled over. I told him i was legal heres my weight slip from truck stop. Weigh it and waste time if he likes. He let me go no scales.

I start to see more and more rigs get pulled over in eastern PA. Itís usually obvious overweight rigs, like a Toyota RAV4 with a single axle trailer or a 1/2 ton with a 5er. I have no idea if they are fined or how much.

I am not sure where I got this notion, maybe from friends etc. But I had a big 37' 5th wheel with 4 slides. I bought a dually truck with the notion I would be a lot less likely to be stopped.

So I always had the notion I might be stopped for weight.

Don't other people have this notion?

You can always increase the payload by reducing the sprung weight. Seats you don't need, carpets, the radio... ;-)

I want to thank you for your cander. You just proved my point exactly. There only going to check axle weights and and the door jam sticker, has nothing to do with pl. I can be over 1000lbs on pl and still be under the axle ratings. 6k on the front and 9750 on the rear, all good, have a nice day officer. If they want to check gvwr of truck or trailer seperatly and not hooked together, they'll escort you to a truck scale. When unhooked I'd be well bellow the 14k gvwr. When truck and trailer are hooked up if the want to weigh your whole rig there not going to have you separate, stay hooked up and weigh together and give a gcwr. All good by 3000lbs. See yah fellas and ladies.

Only one way to increase payload. That is a bigger truck.

Unless it's a f450, then it's less. Only with a ferd can you buy more and get less

I see a lot of information but did i miss the posts on how to achieve a better stopping distance as required by DOT 49 CFR 393.52 ? After you have increased the payload which of course will increase stopping distance. What will be done to compensate?

If it can stop 43k, I believe it can stop 15k, just saying, yeah I know you don't have trailer brakes to help. Put that baby in tow/ haul & turn up the engine brake, no need to touch the brake.

I don't believe so.
Once upon a time a F100 had lighter bearings than a F150. After several mods to my F100 suspension I swapped the complete drive train for a F250 drive train and suspension. That was after F100 bearings failed twice.
