Can't tow above 60mph

Never owned a travel travel before but have owned a ton of enclosed race car trailers BUTalways towed them with a 4 door diesel dually. I towed them at 80mph on numerous occasions and never had any type of distribution hitch.

Im towing a 32 ft 8,000lb travel trailer with a lowered yukon with a husky 32217 hitch. I can not go above 60 mph without the trailer swaying like crazy. It did it on the way on home completely empty and on our first trip. I even had someone follow me to verify the trailer was swaying as bad as it felt and they confirmed it was.

I do not believe the dealer installed my hitch correctly after getting the book out tonight and reading through it tonight. I dont think I have enough weight on the front end.

I was told buy a pro pride 3p hitch and it would solve all my problems but buying almost $3k hitch is hard to swallow being I have never of them.

I sold my dually 6 months ago and havent found another one yet, but I do have a gas 2500 I could tow with but my yukon is alot nicer and would prefer to use it.

1. Check tongue weight. 10-15% with most shooting for 13ish.
2. Yukon or Yukon XL? Length of tow vehicle as well as weight.....
3. P or LT tires on Yukon?
4. Yes, hitch may need adjusting if set up when trailer was empty... And if even correctly then

That is about the speed that an undersized vehicle will have an issue towing. At 35, 45 and 55mph you are ok, correct? I towed for 2 years a 5,000lb trailer with a Honda Ridgeline. It could not control the trailer at 60mph. Lucky, I could stay off the freeway. It towed great at 45 and 55mph.

I switched to a F-150 with the same set-up and I could tow at 70 mph without any sway. That makes me think your trying to tow too much with a smaller tow vehicle.

Yep yep yep and yep. Also what suspension modification were made to the Yukon? That probably doesn’t help that it’s lowered.

Not sure why you would buy a big travel trailer after you sold your crew cab diesel truck? You need to go buy it back because now is when you need it.

What is the GVWR on your trailer?

Try increasing tongue weight first.

Just because you don't know anything about the ProPride 3P doesn't mean it isn't the best hitch available to control sway. If you need to save money, look for a used Hensley Arrow, 2nd best.

Maybe your choice, use the Yukon, ride in comfort at 60 mph and right on the edge of disaster. Or use the 2500 if it tows better.

Hopefully you are not planning on trying to get up to 80 mph with that trailer. Maybe it's a good thing you cant pull more the 60 mph.

Depending on which model Yukon you have, it is rated to tow a maximum of between 7,900# and 8,300# (when the stars are perfectly aligned )

You are somewhere at or over your tow rating before adding anything to the equation. I assume you know that many trailer tires have a max speed rating of 65 mph.

The 2500 gasser is probably actually rated to tow that much. Whereas the Yukon may, in fact, NOT be rated to tow that much. And even if it is, squishy SUV would not be my choice if I had a well built 3/4 ton pickup sitting around.

I mean, hey...if its the Yukon's radio you like, then grab a $20 bluetooth speaker and play music from your phone in the right tow vehicle.

Simple physics. Your Yukon is not enough tow vehicle for that TT.
You're better off taking that $3K you'd spend for the HA or PP and use it as a down payment on a 3/4 ton truck.
With that being said, you should reset the WDH, air all your tires to the max and see what happens.
Make sure your TT is parallel to the ground and you've returned all the weight back to the front of the Yukon.
You tongue weight needs to be 12% or more. 10% won't cut it.
Good luck.

FWIW, what TT is it?

I got those specs here 2015 GMC YUKON XL / YUKON XL DENALI SPECIFICATIONS

Those number seemed high to me, but I assume they're correct. P tires, a 130" wheel base and a 32' 8,000#trailer definitely doesn't look like a good combination.

Yeah, I just wouldn't do it. Its well into 3/4 ton territory, if you ask me.

Thanks for all the replies. The yukon has all upgraded suspension included sway bars, and helper air bags in the rear. It actually rides better than stock just lower. It pulled the trailer fine until 65mph then it went downhill from there. Im not trying to go 80+ but 70-75mph would be nice unless Im being unrealistic with a travel trailer. We go that fast with our racing setups that are alot longer and bigger.
My shop truck has 200k+ miles and is an extended cab only reason we dont like it over the yukon. If I need to I will buy another dually or a another 4 door 2500. I didnt want to sell my last dually but someone made me an offer for it I couldnt turn down so I sold it.
