I have an F150 and have researched the options for them pretty thoroughly. Pretty sure that the HDPP does not change the wheelbase. A super crew with a 6 1/2' bed has a wheel base of 157 inches. This is the case both with and without the HDPP. A supercab with an 8' bed has a wheelbase of 163 inches. This is the case both with and without the HDPP. Apologies if I am wrong about this.

Humm - I stand corrected. That you don't need the HDPP option to get the 163" wheelbase. But the HDPP option I am pretty sure you get the thicker frame and a 4,800lb capacity rear axle plus the 163" wheelbase.

I bet the truck with the long wheelbase without HDPP would also tow pretty darn well.

Thank you for all the replies. Post #10 was sort of the answer I was looking for.
I'm not looking to pull a trailer was just curious about how the "rules of thumb" were derived.

When I ordered my 2022 F-150 with both the heavy duty Payload Pkg & Trailer Tow Pkg I had asked if the frame was thicker, sales guy said no but did mention the brakes were more robust with the 2 pkgs combined. My rear GAWR is rated at 4800lbs

^ I would think the frame would be more thick, makes sense but no documentation one way or another.

I think this shows a .11 frame thickness for the longer HDPP wheelbase.

Well I would say apples to TT only, as the hitch is located 3' to 4' behind the rear axle. With a 5th wheel the hitch is located almost directly over the rear axle, so no leverage.

This chart is for travel trailers only. Not 5th wheels.

This specific set of guidelines it for TT, however there is still a formula for 5th wheels but I do don't know what it is. I have seen plenty of videos where a 5th wheel has pushed a truck sideways.

You are right that 5th wheels/gooseneck is typically right over the axle, but the that is not always true. My truck I am about 1.5' behind the rear axle however I have a 236" WB and my truck outweighs my toy hauler by about 5000 lbs. I know may others that have their hitch behind the axle.

The F150 HDPP frame is indeed heavier than any other F150 frame.

Fleet Ford specs shows F150 frame thickness at ...
.087
.100
.110

Depending on cab/wheel base/etc selections.

The F150 HDPP has the heavier .110 T at 49000 psi frames.
In fact it has a lot of heavier components that other F150 trucks.

https://fordbbas.com/publications

The old Fleet Ford spec website gave us specs all the way back to '00. Ford dropped it and now we can only find these specs back to '14 or so.

There are two trucks that I know of off the top of my head that standout half ton trucks on steroids. Both these trucks have a longer wheelbase, bigger brakes, tow mirrors, bigger payload, stronger rear axle capacity and a few other nice to have features when towing.

Those trucks are the F-150 with the HDPP option and the Nissan Titan XD. Of these either truck would be better than the 1,000's of other 150/1500 series trucks out there.

To the OP - when the manufacturer makes a truck for towing they stretch the wheelbase.
