Considering new truck
currently have a 2013 Ram 2500 diesel that is fine. I use it as my daily driver and tow 30%. We go out on weekends 10 months out of the year.
$5000 would put my current truck back in pristine shape. Or I could buy a 2019 3500 to replace it. A 3500 will allow me more towing options. Like moving trailers for folks I know. One fellow I know makes his truck payments by shuttling trailers for private buyers. Apparently many folks buy trailers, move them to one spot, and leave them there.
But our next trailer my not be a 5ver. A travel trailer is all one level, and that could be the key.
So, 3500 or not. Also considering 2019 used low mileage trucks.

If you like your current truck then fix what's wrong and keep it. If not then dig deep go truck shopping!

This is my 2008 with 135K on the OD and it is now broken in and has everything I want on the truck. Plus, it is paid for so I have more money to spend on RVing.

TFL just posted the 2020 Ram 3500 HO Dually towing 30,000lbs up the Ike Gauntlet. In over all TFL points the Ram was better than the GM 3500 Dually but not the Ford 350 Dually. The Ford had the measurable more powerful engine.

But it's still a Ford.

I think you should keep what you have. If you want to move some folks RVs for them then put some air bags on your truck to help with payload. When you have the cash saved up for the new one buy a new one.

For me, the simplicity of the Cummins I believe is key to longevity.
I am also looking into tuners for fuel mileage, not power.

If the truck meets 2020 EPA pollution requirements then it is not simple. The use of a DEF system adds complexity. All the filtering of the exhaust system to remove the NOx and soot adds complexity.
Granted the power is amazing but diesel engines are no longer simple.

You just KNOW people will be yanking that stuff off into a huge parts pile dont you? Just like in the 1970s and 80s, people don't know why this stuff is on there and don't care, it'll get ripped off 75% of the time.

I would guess 25% of the counties in the US has some sort of emissions testing. So you can not just rip that pollution equipment off.
Plus what problems does ripping the pollution equipment off? Check engine lights?
Any diesel truck rolling coal is like someone that smokes. In 2020 it is a disgusting behavior.

Obviously, this stuff does fall off of some trucks , but I think the %’s would be closer to single digits. I have maybe 2-3 customers with deleted trucks , and I’m in a central Texas , non-emission testing county. I did see my share of blocked off EGR’s and removed Cat’s in the 70’s & 80’s though. Even then it was a small percentage.
