Cruise Control

Any of y'all use your cruise control while in tow/haul mode? I have when pulling a light boat or single 4 whlr trailer but not while pulling my 30ft 5er. Just wondering if I'm missing an opportunity to make long stretches of flat terrain a little easier. Certainly wouldn't consider it in hilly or mountain country or while bucking headwinds. What do you think?

I use it all the time...
It has a steadier foot than I'll ever have...

(Not on snow, or ice, however)

I use it but a lot less than when unladen. It works well on flatter terrain. Since I have a gas engine and 6 speed plus a heavy load, the cruise tends to downshift harder and be more impatient than my right foot. Cruise will impede upshifts on slight or moderate inclines whereas I can pretty much control shift points by how I apply the gas myself.

When I use cruise and tow/haul and go downhill it works well by downshifting quicker.

I know it depends on the TV but I use mine frequently, when appropriate, mindful of weather conditions.

I use mine in hilly conditions, both up and down on highway/freeways. If I am in the type of up hill that would up and downshift in a lot in auto, I will switch to manual and set the highest gear I want it in. In my 6 speed Chevy that is usually 5th. In both of my trucks I have exhaust or engine braking and setting the cruise speed will engage these as well as downshift to keep you at a constant speed. I have come down some very large grades like this.

Really the only place I do not use it is when there is a need for a lot of variable speeds. County roads, back roads, heavy traffic.

Try yours how you would normally use it when not towing. See what it does not does not do for you. Then adjust your style from there.

I used it towing and not towing with 4:30 gears and 6 speed. Nice and smooth with very little shifting because the truck would increase turbo boost before downshifting. I stayed 95% in 6th gear and 5% in 5th gear.

Mostly flat land towing with a few mountains.

I always use CC no matter what I'm driving. Heck even used it on my 06 Goldwing.
The only time I don't use cruise is in hilly or mtn type towing or driving where the speeds and grades are too inconsistent.

any where , any time except slippery roads. I know the engine brake works with the cruise on so if the roads wide open and light to no traffic up and down hills with cruise on is easy on me for sure. heavy traffic I control the go , never on auto pilot. Some of the newest trucks have forward radar and can slow down and maintain gap with the cars in front of you , even some class 9 tractor trailers can run cruise in traffic .

All the time, unless weather prevents it. I get up to speed, put it in 6th, set the cruise and just sit back and enjoy the ride. I find I get much less fatigued if I can relax when I drive, cruise control helps a lot with that.

I also use CC a lot. But I usually use MANUAL shifting of the transmission so I can predict the change of gears accordingly.
