I saw this on Amazon and googled around to see what it was all about. It seems like a magical box that will just plug into your car and tell you all the important things you need to know for towing. This always makes me suspicious. But being as I'm just getting back into towing a tt, have a tv that may be marginal for the job (Durango RT) I figured I'd buy one and give it a shot.
This is not a complete review. Think of it more of an "as it happens blog". I'm going on my first trip today and just got the BetterWeigh this morning. I don't have time to do a real calibration (there is a manual calibration procedure, but apparently the Durango is in the unit's database), CAT scales are not conveniently located near me, and I have a lot of other items to prepare before leaving today.
If you're curious what this thing looks like and how it works, they have some pretty good videos on YouTube. (
https://youtu.be/rIEJ1QLb7Vg as an example).
So far, all I've done is download the app to my phone, plug the unit into my ODB2 port, and do a basic vehicle wight measurement. It came out to about 5,500 pounds. That's probably fairly close since the curb weight of the vehicle is 5380, 100 pounds for gas and 190 pounds for me. I'll do a suspension calibration a bit later and then see how it reads trailer weight and tongue weight.
I'm also getting a Sherline LM 100 as someone else suggested, but that won't come till maybe tomorrow or next week. I'll be able to compare real tongue weight to what the BetterWeigh calculates then. Finally, when I get some time in the next few weeks I'll get to a CAT scale with the trailer and weigh my vehicle, then my vehicle with trailer and WD hitch set up.
Hopefully I'll get this all done within 30 days so I can return this thing if it does not work.
