Diesel noise
I am buying a Cache Creek CK2 which will be approximately 20K loaded. I think I will need a larger tow vehicle. I am hoping to use a gas vehicle as it is much quieter. Are there any large quieter diesel TVs?
Thanks,
Steve

Welcome to the forum.
With all due respect things are relative. Granted some of the higher trim packages have more sound deadening materials installed. We don't find our truck noisy. But even still the current family of light duty diesel motors are still quieter running at 1800 RPM/ 800 LB/FT than a poor gas motor screaming along a 3800+ RPM at the same speed. A 20K# 5'r could have your Gasser near red-line much of the time, up hill and down.
Much would have to do with the amount of actual travel you intend to do.
JMHO.
Best wishes.

Thanks,
Thanks for the info.
By noise I was thnking about the outside noise as we drive through the campground. But driving 250 - 300 miles per day is important also. We usually take a long trip (2-3 months)(6 - 10K miles) and several 2-3 week trips in between. We have a Allegro open road and tow a smart car. Changing to a pickup for around town will be a change. We are liking the 5er because of the increased living area.

No gas powered pickup rates to tow anywhere near 20k.
Modern diesel are much quieter than diesels from 5-10 years ago

Drop by your local Ford/Ram and GM dealer and drive a new one....and stand outside with it running. You can't tell if its a big gas or a new gen diesel.

Coming from a Hemi Ram to a Cummins Ram, yes you can. It is noticeable noisier. However they are much much quieter than their predecessors. The OP might be surprised how quiet.

WOW--going from the comfort and convenience of a class A to sitting in a "pick-up" pulling a near max capacity 5er all day. My guess is that noise will be the least of your concerns. {Used to pull a trailer--would never go back}
PS- need to practice parking your new pick-up at the mall or down town--better get use to walking from the back lot.....[

With a 20k unit motor noise driving around a Campground would be very low on the priority list against comfort going hours down the road... they simply are not that loud!

Quieter?
Diesel makes all its power down low in the RPM range. Gas truck is just the opposite.
Go up a hill, listen to the gas motor scream all the way to the top, and tell me which is quieter.
20K with a gas truck over a diesel? No way.

Completely agree! We can carry on a normal conversation even when down in 3rd pulling a grade at 3,000RPM's.
Now the 98 12V truck was MUCH louder!!!

There are a few newer trucks in the CG we're staying in that have been "bombed" (emissions equip. deleted, bulletproofed, tuned, 4" tubes) of course you can hear them fire-up and the whine of the turbo spooling up is noticeable perhaps not objectionable.
Some can look brand new and are bombed already, OP don't confuse those with stock new trucks.
Stock, they also do not smell either!
My neighbor's brand new gas Hemi toad with dual exhaust is louder than our 3500HD even in cool weather.
It's the Razor's and side by sides and "through the hull exhaust" boats that are kind annoying around here.
You might want to quiz some other 20K# 5r's hauling with gasoline if you can find one, and see how they like their experience.
Be well

You should test drive a new diesel. I have a 2016 GMC Denali and am a little disappointed. It is too quiet.

X10 on that. I had a 2002 36 ft.Monaco La Palma class A for 12 years. Workhorse W22 with the 8.1 liter gas engine. A lot of driving out west on hills and mtns.
Nothing quiet about driving that setup any where with all the interior and engine noise especially under load.
Downsized to a 25 ft. TT being towed with a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 Eco Diesel. The towing vs. driving the class A is much more comfortable, quiet, and a better overall experience for me.
Gave up space and amenities sure, but I'm happy where I'm at.
Buy a proper sized diesel. You won't regret it. Other opinion's will vary.
