Does anyone know what this is

Just purchased a Ford 2013 f350 Diesel. This red plug is next to the trailer plug in. Nobody can tell me what it is for.

Battery charging.
The vehicle is set up for heavy current battery charging. You will likely have a heavy duty solenoid near the battery that is fed by a positive direct from the battery, the other post likely has a lead going back to the plug you show.
The other terminal of the plug shown should go direct to ground likely on the trucks frame.

The previous owner either had a trailer with a large bank of batteries they wanted to charge while they were going down the road or maybe a flatbed they had a winch on.

For heavy duty 12v leads. You can run jumper cables, winch or other high draw 12v equipment from it.

That looks like an Anderson SB 50A connector. I think that the other comments are correct about what it is for.

It's a 175, not 50.
