This will be used frequently as a daily driver. I don't want more truck than I need. I'm thinking a 1 ton dually should be plenty.

Thanks,
Rick

Not to nitpick but I will. I think all F-450's have 4:30 gears. At least the ones I looked at. If it has 4:10 gears then I learned something again.

We have a 2018 Road Warrior triple axle toy hauler, it weighs empty around 16500 loaded it is just under 21K.
Our truck is a 2017 3500 RAM with the Asian transmission and 4:10 rear end. Before I bought the 2017 I went to a car show and talked to a factory rep from RAM. I showed him what RV we wanted and he looked at the specs and recommended the 4:10 rear end. We talked about the driving and us being full timers about how we would use the truck, his thought was get the 4:10 you will not be sorry
With the 4:10 my fuel mileage is a little lower then it would be with 3:73 rear end, but the trade off is worth the difference.

For example we just did a trip from Wilmington Ohio to Lake Cumberland Ky to Pigeon Forge and back to Wilmington Ohio. Running around and everything it was 1060 miles. Total engine running time was 29 hrs 38 minutes. Fuel mpg was 9.5 total overall for the trip.

Our next trip will be from Wilmington Ohio to Phoenix Ariz. via Ky, Tenn,SC,Florida,Miss, La and Texas. Will let you know how it goes

Dually. Got one. Wouldn't pull heavy without it.

For all the reasons already posted, Dually. No one has ever regretted going dually.

We pull a 40' ft wheel, I traded a 2500 for a new dually this year and I love the way it pulls. I'm not as tired at the end of the day as I was before. My advice - Go Dually

Dually's are a little more stable but also more expensive up front, buying tires, good luck rotating them, and until a blowout blows out the fiberglass extension! Flatbeds with duallys are nice if you don't need the bed, we do! Also harder to park, etc because of the extra width that you and your wife may or may not be used to! I have both and really don't notice much difference.

Go with the dually no question you'll never look back. The cost of the dually option is well worth the cost ($1500 - $2500) or so. The stability along is a game changer.
Good Luck

We've been going back and forth (A or 5ver) and are now thinking we won't be going FT and will instead take several 1-3 month trips a year.

The current game plan is to purchase a smaller toy hauler and a 1 ton diesel pickup as we plan on spending a fair amount of time out west (live in MI).

I've been reading a lot on here trying to decide whether or not I should spend the extra $$ on a dually. The toy haulers I've been looking at are in the 13K - 17K GVWR range with pin weight in the 2,400 - 3,000 range. Am I in dually territory? Any other info I can post that would help?

Thanks,Rick

Bought a new 2018 Ram 3500 crew cab long bed 6.7 with AISIN and 3.73 gears. Pulling a 17.5K trailer forget about cruise control unless you are on absolutely flat roads. Even the slightest rise in the road will have it downshifting to 5th. You have to anticipate the rise and ease in the throttle to keep it from downshifting. Mileage is about 10 pulling, 16 city 20 highway. Try to stay away from any BioDiesel as it will cut your mileage 1-2+mpg in addition to adding crap in the fuel system. Firestone air bags in the rear keep the truck level with the 3000# pin weight. ATI TTR46, 46 gallon refueling tank. BD3 hitch. Very smooth ride whether pulling or not.
I went from a MH to a fifth wheel for safety of airbags, etc. The fifth wheel is a PITA but I will get used to it. It gets a little easier with every hook-up.

Good luck
