I put one of these in last year for our trip to Colorado.

https://www.sbfilters.com/fuel-tanks...nk-powerstroke

Very pleased and didn't loose any real estate in the bed of the truck. Doubled my range and cut my stops in half. Just remember to subtract the weight from your payload. Many Youtube videos on the install. I had my shop install it for about $250. S&B even provided a programmer to change the computer settings.

I hear all the good things about an aux tank, and I enjoyed most of them after the initial install on my first F350 with a 35 gal tank. Then a new truck and I went to a local shop to install, and he made it simple with a pump and switch and feed the aux fuel to the refueling stand pipe, and one day I started the transfer and then I forgot the switch ....... and the closed rail system on the diesel engine feed return hot fuel to the fuel tank.....and you guessed it. When I opened the fuel cap, it was over-pressurized and hot diesel fuel shot out for several feet! That was one nail in the aux tank coffin. And I had no trouble selling it, except in states like CA where transferring aux fuel to any part of the vehicle's fuel system's tank is illegal - gotta pump it directly to the engine, for a very good reason or two.

Well, that was a poor install. Mine is gas and a simple gravity transfer. This will work well for diesel too.

I may be wrong, but I am of the understanding that it is illegal to gravity feed gasoline.....federal statute? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I put an RDS 40 gal gravity fed tank in my truck. No regrets and makes a good shelf for the weber and blackstone. I may put in an electric shutoff and a gage.

That tank would seem like a PITA to fill unless you're 6'?" tall.

Well, it's a sort of unclear statute. I have read something that tends to say that, but it can be interpreted differently.

I have mine plumbed with an NC (normally closed) electric solenoid. I need to flip a switch to activate and it also shuts off with key off. To be honest, it's like almost anything that is added on a vehicle. One needs to use common sense, which is apparently not so common anymore.

I have tried to cause issues every which way in testing the system over 8 years, and I know of only 2 things I need to be careful of.

Your method sounds about as safe as it can possibly be, barring a stuck solenoid valve or an electrical short that would cause the switch to be closed all the time. And I do agree, common sense is almost as rare as rainbow colored unicorns these days. Unfortunately, we all share the same roads, campgrounds, etc and it is extremely evident pretty much on a daily basis.....common sense is no longer common. Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.

We have an RDS gravity flow tank that sets even with the bed rails and does not interfere with the bed cover.
RDS Auxiliary Fuel Tanks

Any tank you mount in the bed needs to be bolted with blots, nuts, and washers, not just attached with self-drilling screws.

No aux tank for me, not wanting it in the bed or to loose the spare tire.

Swapped the 38 gallon OEM to a 65 gallon Titan at around $1800. Price wasnt the concern, having options was the goal

Sold the OEM for $500.

Now when and where I fuel has more options... worth it to me.

YMMV

It's only money....but it's my only money

X-rated, (or anyone I guess) where did you run your tank vent line. Is the tank fitting anything special?
Thanks

As to my installation on a gas vehicle, I made it very simple and reliable. I cut the fuel fill hose, fabricated a pipe with 2 fittings that goes in the filler neck hose. 1 hose is the gravity feed from the auxiliary tank, the higher fitting is the vent from main tank to auxiliary tank. without a vent it would be very very slow or impossible to fill by gravity feed and the auxiliary tank could bulge or blow.

I see people adding a vent up inside the gap between bed and 1/4 panel or inside the bed near the top rail. I see no reason why a setup like mine wouldn't work, but I'd have to take a look at the system to be sure.

Lots of pre-made transfer tank installation kits for diesels, none or very few for gas. They are not all that expensive either.

Well that should help. I was thinking of newer trucks at 59"
