? for dually owners
Buying my 1st dually.
Going from a 2015 Ram 3500 SRW to a 2017 Ram 3500 dually.
Was curios about MPG. With the same rear end going unladen getting 21 mpg highway driving.
By going to the dually I know I'll be getting a bit less. Are we talking a minor or major difference?

It depends a lot on the gearing in the rear end. We had a 2500 with a 4.1 rear end and got about 12 mpg. Our 450 has a 4.3 rear end and gets about 10 mpg.

2017 Ram Dually has the option of 3.42, 3.73, and 4.10 rear ends where your SRW is only available as a 3.42.
The gearing is the potential difference in MPG.. the duals out back make a very minimal difference.

My '14 RAM dually with the 4.10 gets 15-16 solo doing 75. Dually's do get less fuel mileage. But I'm happy.

Here is an honest comparison. I own a 2016 Dodge 2500. My brother who lives in the same town has a 2016 Dodge 3500 DRW. Both have the same engine, transmission and rear gear ratio of 3.42.
I average 19 mpg hwy / 15-16 mpg city. Typically I average 17 mpg mixed. My brother sees 16 mpg hwy / 13 city with 14 mpg mixed. Keep in mind we live in the Colorado mountains.

Our RAM is equipped with the Aisin transmission and 4.10 gears. It's rated to tow 30,190 lbs. It averages 14-16 mpg combined when not towing, 8-9 towing our 20K lb 5th wheel. If I had a lighter foot and cruised at lower speeds I could get better mileage.
If you plan to, or may in the future tow more than 15K lbs I recommend 4.10 gears. The small penalty you may pay in fuel economy will be offset by improved performance while towing. My theory is that if you buy a truck equipped to perform the toughest job you may ever ask it to do, you'll never be sorry.
Happy trails,

I averaged in the high 15s unloaded with the 3:73 rear end empty and 10 towing a 9000 lb 5th wheel.

Welcome to the forum.
I'd tend to agree with this sentiment.
Minor,
Most run DRW because we tow heavy, everything about RV'ing is a compromise. You can't always have it all-ways.
No idea what you're towing but, happy motoring you'll enjoy the new truck.

I have the 2016, 6.7, AISIN, 3.73, long bed, crew cab. I get 19 on why with fiver hitch and bed load of stuff. I get 8.5 - 9.5 towing #18k - #19k. Towing mpg depends on speed and hills vs flat.

I have a 2012 3500 DRW 4wd crewcab/long bed, with a 4.10 rearend.
My truck is not broke in yet, (12,900 miles). The absolute best mpg I have got, so far, is 15 on a all highway trip to Indiana... about 750 miles each way.
My average is usually around 12 - 13 mpg.
Not near as good as my 2004 2500 crewcab/shortbed 4wd, which would get up to 21 on a trip.
I suspect that most of the difference between the two Dodges I have had has more to do with emission controls.

I believe you are correct. The 2013+ trucks are better on fuel and the emission systems on them are proving to be better all around than the 2007-2012 systems.
