Ford 7.3 godzilla gas mileage towing?
Ford 7.3 godzilla gas mileage towing? Anyone want to chime in on what mileage there getting towing a 8-10k trailer? High altitude mileage? Wondering if its worth the diesel hassles and considering the 7.3 instead. Got stranded in nebraska because of def issues on ram. So Im getting 10 mpg on my ram 6.7 towing, and have 36 gallon bed tank, so able to go @ 600 miles without refueling which is nice. Like to know the 7.3 range towing.

I have a '22 ram with the 6.7 and I get 11-12 towing our 10,000# 5th wheel at 70ish usually. the couple of 7.3 reviews I read before I bought the ram were in the the same 11-12 range.

I'm getting 11-12 mpg towing 9200-9500 lbs with a 19 Ram 3500 CTD. If you're only getting 10 mpg with your 6.7 then I doubt you'll get much over 9 with the 7.3.
It really depends on where you tow and others tow and what you tow and what they tow and how fast. You don't say what year your Ram is.
But, a 7.3 vs a CTD @10K will buy a lot of gas plus you'll save on fuel filter cost.

Lol. No one actually answering the question.
I have a 7.3 gas engine and I normally get about 9-10 mpg but down to 8 with a headwind.

I had a 2020 7.3L gas srw f350. I averaged 8mpg towing our 32 ft 12000lb 5th wheel. Sometimes 7, sometimes 9. That's calculated from miles and gallons, not trusting the meter on the dash.
Those miles were in MI, OH, PA, KY, TN, NC, WV. That means flat, rolling hills, and Appalachians, but no Rockies or high altitude stuff. 64mph on the highway. The 48 gallon tank in the crew cab long bed truck really helps with range compared to the 36 gallon in the shorter trucks.

How aerodynamic is your trailer? Big huge frontal area sticking up over the truck? That will determine how much torque it takes to pull the thing as much as the weight. High altitude? A gas engine will lose a lot of power by the time you get to 10,000 feet and above. At altitude you need a turbo ramming air into the engine so that means diesel power. Or get the gas engine and have it turbocharged or supercharged!

I hauled a Wolf Creek truck camper on a 17 Ram with the Cummins and it would get 12-13mpg driving from Denver area to Grand Junction over the continental divide up around 11k elevation. Traded it for a F350 with the 7.3 gas and it gets 10-11mpg on the same route. Frontal area is similar to a travel trailer but only around 3000 lbs. Just traded for a travel trailer that weighs around 6000 lbs and bringing it home, it seem like it's getting 9-10mpg. Will take a few trips to sort out the real mpg.

2356 miles 7.3 with 373 rearend
We just arrived phx az. From Ilm nc 2300 plus miles, and we averaged 8.7 with our 2023 f250. Plenty of power on the climb to 6k feet. 7300 lb fr 267 Rbss. 13’ height. Only time I wish I had the 6.7 diesel is at a tight station….people are just rude now. Park at the rv island and go in and eat sit down. Then come out 20 mins later and pump gas before pulling away from pump. My spouse watches it all. God is good, and so isn’t my godzilla.

I get 7 - 8 mpg towing a 11-12K 5th wheel in the mountains of the west. Pretty consistent. I have done 2, 3000+-mile road trips and that is the average. I have the long bed, so my range is about 300 miles without getting into reserve. While I wish my range was more, I am usually able to fuel when disconnected. After those 2 trips I did the math on a diesel and it just does not make sense from a financial perspective. It is much cheaper towing with the 7.3 gas. I would have to be full timing to consider a diesel. Didn't see much difference at high altitudes other than some loss of power, but I always had enough to pass the semis at 7-8000 ft, so it was not an issue.

I have a 2023 F350 7.3 in our fleet; rather than say it gets X miles/gall (since it varies widely based on speed, grades, load and aero), I'll suggest it gets about 3mpg less than my 6.7PSD. I'd expect your range to drop about 25%

Pushing huge amounts of air around large objects at speed requires HP. Forget double digit MPG with a gas engine towing medium to heavy. You barely get 10-11MPG with most diesels. Expect around 8MPG for the average driver towing a large TT or 5er 10000lb+. Carefully, maybe 9 MPG. A diesel would probably make 10 to 11MPG for the same load/size, but with all the extra expenses,DEF etc.
Sure, we are talking a 20% difference in efficiency, but with fuels at different costs, DEF and maintenance, one needs to evaluate what they REALLY need for a truck.
I get 8.0 to 8.5MPG most of the time with an older GM 6.0 gas 6 speed. You might get better with newer 10 speeds and more efficient engines, but don't expect 10MPG no matter what some post here.

Gas mileage is why I got rid of my F350 Godzilla. 6-8 mpg towing a 10k travel trailer. Combined with a tiny fuel tank you couldn’t bypass a gas station. Other than that a great platform.

Yep, it's too bad they put the 34gallon tank in all except for the CC long box trucks (they get the 48 gallon tank; big difference (40+%) )
There is an aftermarket 50-ish gallon tank but it's not cheap.

I have a 2021 F-250 with Godzilla engine - towing a toy hauler in the 10k range (and 13.5 feet tall).
This data is over approximately the last 30,000 miles full timing (keeping track of towing and non towing miles).
Exact numbers: 27,372 total miles = 17,564 towing miles + 9,808 non towing miles
Average while towing = 7.5 MPG
Worst fill up ever was 5.6MPG (in mountains out west)
Average while not towing = 13.5 MPG
Overall for all gas put into truck towing and non towing = 8.9 MPG
