Ditto on JDT comments. The Ford 10-speed works well. We pulled our rig out west last year and it was very smooth even at some of the higher elevations. So far so good. The complexity of the newer designs does concern me but do any of us really have a choice? The way things are going I'm not so sure these rigs have a long term future anyway.

I don’t have much to say regarding MPG 6 speed v. 10 speed. I don’t have real world comparisons in HD trucks. Towing performance is a lot better. That I do know.
Yes, nicely put, simple.
I have a ram 2500 6 speed with the 6.7 cummins, seems it would really be nice to have a 9 or 10 speed.

I like the 10 speed in my truck towing or not, impressed by how smooth it is. I do wish GM had put a specific gear indicator in the dash like the Ford’s have.

I find in interesting they went from a 6 speed to a 10 speed. They must have done their homework and came up with 10 being the best number of gears. I would have guessed they would go from 6 to 8. I bet they reseached that and for some reason did not do it...right to 10.

Toyota used 10 speeds in the Tundra and Nissan used a 9 speed in the Titan.

Why do Ford guys stress about what gear it's in? As long as it's functioning normally and pulling well,I don't even care to know what gear it's in.

LOL - I had a lowly 6 speed and still watch what gear I was in. How else are you going to know what is a Turbo Boost increase or a gear down shift? I can say towing my 5th wheel with 430 gears my truck stayed in 6th gear most of the time. Going up a slight incline the turbo boost would increase but most of the time stay in 6th gear. Oh sure in shifted to 5th gear on occasion.

See - a Ford guy knows this level of detail.

Hi Guys,

The information I have is the 10 speed Allison in the HD’s is not the same transmission designed by Ford/GM. That is the 10 speed that is on the 1500 version of the trucks. The 2500 and 3500 GM vehicles have a different 10 speed that was designed by GM and then also tested/certified by Allison to meet their standards. While it looks like GM took some of the tech from the design of the 1500 they are different transmissions. An engineer at GM has confirmed nothing changes on the HD Allison without approval from Allison to ensure it meets their standards. It’s not just branding. It also sounds like the previous 6-speed was manufactured by GM as well and went through the same process.

I had asked this question earlier this year on the duramax forum and some of the guys with what appears to be some inside knowledge made it pretty clear.

Also, a noticeable difference between the 2500 and 3500 on the GM side is a 12” ring gear in the 3500. Because of this the 3500 doesn’t have torque management like the 2500 does.

I can say the HD Allison is beefy, shifts great, and does an amazing job on the hills.

The more speeds the better. That way you can stay closer to the peak hp when pulling long grades and around peak torque for best mileage when cruising . A CVT is an ideal tranny with almost infinite speeds. Tranny's have come a long way from the old 2 speed power glides.

A friend has a truck identical to mine except it's a 2021 and has the 10 speed transmission.
I towed my camper over the same route approximately 360 miles each way. With my truck I "always" have to stop for fuel on the return leg. With his truck I was able to make the entire run on a single tank of fuel.
Sorry I don't remember numbers since I'll not be buying a new dually any time soon, but I can tell you the fuel consumption difference was significant and in favor of the 10 speed equipped truck.
Standing start was much smoother with the 10 speed and accelerated with authority. My 6 speed equipped 2017 dually is no slouch, but the 2021 10 speed dually definitely had a performance edge.
The Ford 6 speed has a well earned reputation of being bullet proof and I haven't seen anything to indicate the 10 speed will be any different.

The GM 10 spd is not made by Allison; thats nothing but marketing.....it's the same basic trans design that Ford uses with enough changes so GM can call it different

Good to hear; I picked up a new 2022 F350 6.7 10 spd yesterday. 👍

I guess that really helps with keeping the truck moving eh? I was hauling in the hills the other day and didn't know what gear I was in. It was moving fine but I just had to stop and recount the gear changes.

Us GM guys keep large notebooks on the dashboard and console. We write down every gear change to know where we are at. It's a heck of a chore.

I've been thinking of upgrading to a 2 speed Powerglide
It would ease the gearshift accounting chore.

I don't have a turbo boost gauge, thank God. I'd probably be worn out after a 2hr drive.

Does the Ford or GMC 10 speed get much better MPG?

How do they compare to the Ram with the HO 6.7 and Aisin?

They're all the same, none is better than another. Whichever one you buy will be the one you swear is the best and will find nitpicking reasons to say why the other isn't. Owners of other brands will do the same. Your mileage will be greatly exaggerated in public and in private you will wonder why it doesn't do better. Whichever you choose, you will secretly wish you had tried the other, even as you brag about its capabilities.

Can lock out gears you don't need. 5th and 6th are OD gears in the 6 speed. 8th 9th and 10th are OD gears in the 10 speed. Keep the engine in the RPM torque range when towing heavy.
