Does anyone here use a hitch mounted hoist for removing their fifth wheel hitch? If I go this way, I’ll need one that can support 400lbs. The hitch doesn’t weigh that much but I’m adding a safety factor. This is what I’m talking about.
Do you have a garage that the back of your truck fits in? My truck won't fit in my garage, but the truck bed fits just fine. I put an electric hoist on my garage ceiling and lift all kids of stuff in and out of the bed. Just need to make sure your bed is long enough to get past the open garage door on the ceiling.

I have used an engine lift before, even if it has been 40 years since the last time I used one, I think. (Really makes me feel old.) I would be comfortable with that operation. I would love to see a hitch hoist used in a real world situation. I am guessing your spouse wasn't filming you and posting to u-tube, however.
The unit has a single leg that gives it support on the ground. When the TS, which weighs about 350lbs I think, was high enough to clear the bed the whole post was tipped towards one side. Also, the unit couldn’t be pulled out enough from the truck so the arm would pivot opposite the truck with the tailgate down. I had to pivot it partway, then put the tailgate up, then pivot it the rest of the way.

I have no doubt it would work for game or anything under 300lbs, but I want more stability when there is $3,500 suspended over four feet in the air.

I do not. It would be easier if I did.

I do have a 10x14 shed though. I’ve wondered if I could do a cantilevered arm off of that with a hoist. The shed isn’t secured to the ground but it surely weighs enough to support 400lbs 6’ feet out. I think

Weld an A frame together or make it out of wood beams high enough to clear the bed with the hitch and leave by your shed . You could put casters on it also .
