Home Depot Dump Trailers 4,050 lb capacity

I am thinking of renting one of Home Depots Dump Trailers to get 2 ton of decretive stone for landscaping. I would only be towing 15 miles on secondary roads.

I was not going to post here but thought maybe I am overlooking something. Is it as simple as driving to the stone place. Have a few buckets from a skid loader dumped into the trailer, get weighed, pay and drive to the house and start unloading it?

Right now I am thinking decorative stone or rubber mulch.

Good plan with the trailer.

Rubber mulch washes away.

Decorative stone needs a bit of a retainer wall around it.

Are you putting down a weed blocker material first?

Yes, a thick weed blocker. Plus a short retaining wall.

I probably will need a tarp to cover the stone while towing. I am worried about losing stones that hit other vehicles.

Rubber mulch comes in bags that I would just put in my truck bed. The chunky rubber mulch might not wash away easily. I am thinking 40 bags would be what I would need.

Many places sell by the yard and will have a track loader/skid steer with a 1/2 yard bucket. 2 tons is about a yard and a 1/2 of gravel.

Thanks jjackrash - good info.

A big problem with stone is getting the right amount. I would hate to be 1/4 ton short. With mulch I would go get 3 more bags or as many as needed.

Oh - one time I got stone in a different truck bed. What a mess getting the stone out of the tailgate hinge area. I got only 3/4 ton. It really messed up the spray in bed liner and that poor truck probably still had debris from that stone when I sold it 3 years later.

A tarp in the bed first will solve the stones in the hitch rails and/or tailgate hinges. After getting most of the product out of the bed you can pull the tarp out starting at the front of the bed.
The trailer will work better .

I have a smallish 5x10 that holds about three yards of gravel, but it's also got upgraded 14k rated tires and axles, so its never too heavy.

Just drive in and tell them what you want. They'll direct you to the right pile and send a bucket. Here's where it gets interesting, because the operator will continue to dump until you say Whoa!. The first time I got stone in my 3/4 ton pickup I ended up with 12,000 lb in the bed. Less is better until you get an idea what volume gives you what weight. If you want more weight, tell the weigh master you want to go back to more.

Back in my earliest driving days, driving dump trucks (Mack B61 10-wheelers - yeah, it was that long ago), we'd request stone by the ton. You'd have to tell the wheel loader operator or asphalt plant operator how much you wanted in tons, not yards. It may have been a local thing, but you should know about how much you want in both yards and tons (just in case) so you don't end up with a flattened trailer.

My local place does it by the cubic yard - go pay first then pull up and the scoop truck comes over and pours it in. Rock and whatnot gets heavy in a hurry. I think I once had 4 yards on a big beefy trailer I rented. Trailer and all was over 10K.

What is the tow vehicle being used? Does it have a connection for trailer lights? Does trailer require trailer brakes? What size receiver hitch and what size ball?

I will be using a 2017 pick-up truck with a brake controller and hitch receiver. I am thinking 5,500lbs will be all that is being towed. Stone and trailer weight is that 5,500lbs. The trailer looks heavy(ish) especially with the dump hydraulics.

I will need to buy the matching ball to hitch up the trailer. I have a ball mount already.
