How big can I go?

Sorry for what I'm sure is a somewhat common question. I've looked at various calculators/guides but I'm still unsure on how big of a travel trailer I can tow.

I have a 2022 F350 SuperDuty
  • 7.3L V8 Gas Engine
  • 10 speed automatic
  • Single Rear Wheel
  • 4x4
  • 3.73 Electronic locking axle

I currently have a Shasta 25BH travel trailer, but we're thinking about upgrading - possibly to a 5th wheel. I'm just wondering if anyone can advise on how "big" a trailer I can go with - either bumper tow or 5th wheel. Thanks in advance for any answer.

You did not give us long bed or short bed truck. Also the rear axle rating that is on the driver's door jam. What is the payload on your truck as it is a very capable truck.

My knee jerk answer is 14,000 or 15,000lbs.

For accurate responses, you’ll need to post the CCC, or payload that’s on the inside of the driver side door. Trucks come in all different flavors of accessories, so payloads differ.

You don't say what cab and box you have but the guide has a 5th wheel/gooseneck max of 16,200 lbs....it would be 20,000+ with 4.30's but the 3.73's max out 4k less. 13,000 - 15,000 lbs max on a bumper pull depending on exactly what you have. https://www.fleet.ford.ca/content/da...gGuide_Eng.pdf

There have been people citing good experiences with the 7.3 at 16,000 lbs though at that weight, I'd go diesel myself. We have an F350 7.3 on order for the fleet but it will only typically tow an 8,000 lb trailer. I would consider up to 12,000 lbs or so trailer GVWR to be a good match though you could certainly push that number higher.

2 cents,
Dave

I am thinking the long bed truck is a lot better at towing then then smaller short bed truck. If you have a short bed truck I think 16,000lbs is a pipe dream. It is a stretch even with the long bed SRW truck IMHO.

I wouldn't go over 10,000 loaded for a 5er. Yeah you can tow way more but it is a gasser and it will work to tow 10,000 lbs. It will be better than the old 6.2 or Hemi 6.4 but if you're in the mtns a lot at higher elevations then it will work harder. It's all subjective of course. Some guys would tow 14-15,000 with a gasser. It's just not something I would like doing day after day. MPG will suck the bigger your go. That cuts your distance between fill ups down.

Why do you think the gas motor will be a problem? I had a gas motor home towing a 4 door Jeep. Total weight of 30,000 pounds. Likely a little more on a few occasions.

Drove it all over the western mountains with no problems at all. Would a truck pulling a trailer be any different?

I believe a motorhome gearing is much lower than a truck.

Keep in mind there is a difference between what you can potentially comfortably tow to the local lake a few times per season, and what you can comfortably tow on a 50 state tour of the US, dealing with mountains, cross winds, etc..

Ah, my apologies! Thanks for the replies so far, here's the additional info:

It's a short bed (6' 3/4")
4 door (supercrew)
GVWR: 11300 lb
front: 5200 lb
rear: 7230 lb

According to Ford, you can tow up to 15,000 lbs on a bumper pull and 16,200 on a 5th wheel or gooseneck.

With a 1 ton gasser, you should have enough payload even at those max numbers. Obviously the smaller and lighter the better in terms of towing performance and I would rather have a longbox with 4.30's or a diesel towing at 16,000 lbs......and probably a DRW is getting advisable much beyond that.

2 cents,
Dave

Please list the payload capacity as well. An actual CAT scale value is a better starting point because GVWR - CAT scale number is a better way to go.

And on the flip side (4.30's though);

No it wouldn't be any different. It would still be annoying to me.
