I stopped at my local Ford Dealer - Bad news

Inventory was really low. Maybe 3 new trucks and mostly used trucks. I stopped to see about a recall on my F-250 tailgate so while I was there I figured I would look at F-150's and Rangers. Pickings were so slim that I lost interest fast. Mostly dark colors too.

This dealership had 170 F-150's in 2018 and had 2 today Aug. 17, 2022. Really sad. The salesman said I would need to order a truck. I said I would like to see them 1st.

Same here. My local Ford dealership has virtually no new stock. Every year they put on a “sell off” at the fairgrounds, and send out “you can win something flyers” to people to get them to come in. I got one, went, and they had around 100 or so vehicles there. Of that, probably around 30 or so trucks. I asked the salesman how many new vehicles they had there. His answer; 1. And it was a car.

He told me they have basically become a used car dealership, and the only guaranteed way of getting a new one was to order it. And then wait… and wait… and wait.

same around here especially small town dealers. One dealers sales dept is down to just the sales mgr.....and has been that way since the first pandemic shortage hit.

I was talking with a guy that works as a mechanic at our local Ford / Toyota dealer. They are the same way, with virtually no new cars on the lot. He said other than used cars, their only business was people coming in to order new cars. Maybe that's just the way it's going to be now. I've never ordered a vehicle before, but may have to for my next one.

It's everywhere; the Porsche dealer has 3 cars including the $1m+ 918 in showroom. Range Rover/Jag/Volvo dealer has some Volvos and one RR Defender.....someone's classic E type is in the showroom holding down the carpet!

Our local Ford dealers haven't had new Superduties on the lot for many months - every time I see one, I stop in but they are always ordered trucks that have just arrived. The one Ford dealer even put the ordered trucks on Autotrader so when I saw it, I rushed down only to be told it was an ordered/sold truck....

I lucked out with my F350 as it was an ordered truck that arrived after an 8 month wait and the buyer backed out due to financing.....as it was, I was in a meeting when the salesperson called and by the time I got back to her 3 hrs later the truck was sold.....luckily for me that guy couldn't get financing either so the truck is in my driveway. I had a sudden need for a truck so waiting 8-10 months wasn't going to cut it.

My suggestion is to get used to ordering vehicles; the days of going to the dealer and picking one out of 20-30 on the lot are gone.....for now, anyhow and maybe forever.

Local dealers have zero trucks in stock and maybe a few suv's.
Tried buying a washing machine at Home Depot. Nothing in stock.... yep, have to order it.

I wonder how folks will react when this happens at their local grocery store. Oh, wait. Seems grocery shortages have already happened. Sad commentary on the state of our economy.

Just toured the Ford Rouge factory in Dearborn Michigan. They are making Ford 4 door trucks and have lots full of them. Maybe they are next years models. I know they have more than one truck plant and had a chip shortage. They were driving them on the test track so don't know what's up.

Most of the worlds passenger vehicles are sold at dealerships built to order. This model has been in place in Europe forever. I lived in Spain for 3 years and ordered my Volkswagen by configuring it online and ordering it through the dealer. It arrived in 8 weeks. This was well before COVID screwed up supply chains.

The dealers carry demos of the popular models, just one example in a popular trim and color. You test drive it and see if you like it before ordering exactly the options you want.

Some of my European colleagues used to poke fun at our dealership model where often the car you buy has been parked outside for many weeks to several months. It has probably been started and stopped dozens of times just moving around the lot. Not good for any vehicle especially in the winter!! They joked that the “new” car was already used.

I’m not likely doing anything with my vehicles for another 3-4 years but I look forward to test driving then bidding out my custom order to several dealers for the best price. By then I should be able to get whatever I want within 8-10 weeks

Now if I could only just buy direct…

Build back better or the chip shortage? Not real sure if they put chips in washers. Has to be a shipping problem but we seem to be going backwards.

Of course they have computer chips in washers and dryers today. Heck, both of mine are connected to the internet and have wifi. Not much works without these parts anymore.

Shipping IS another problem. I have 2 vehicles parked at the shop waiting on parts for a week now. I have ebikes on order, Fedex decided to park the shipment at a warehouse for 3 days for whatever reason. They are on their 3rd delivery rescheduling and 3 days late already.

The few HD trucks on the lots around here all have a $10,000 markup over MSRP.
