Marker lights work then go out.

Towing a new (to us) 2002 R-Vision C-23 hybrid with a 2006 VW Touareg. 7-way plug was installed by UHaul. With tow vehicle headlights on, all lights on the trailer work, but a few minutes later the marker lights and tails go out. The brake and turn signals still work though. If I turn headlights off, then back on, all lights work again but the same problem again happens. Thought sure it was a ground issue so I removed the tow-side plug ground, shined up the metal, applied dielectric grease, and tightened it up. The Ground area is thin metal though. Should I relocate the ground to the actual frame? Thanks.

OK, but does this sound like any ground issue you've ever heard of?

It sounds like a protection breaker. Pull out most of your marker bulbs and see if the tail lights stay on. If that works add them back slowly (1 per min) until it quits again to learn the threshold of the protection. You may have a bad bulb, but his will help find it.

I just did a search on trailer wiring for a Toureg and I found a complete harness made by etrailer. It has the module required to take separate brake and turn signals on the VW side and combine them for the trailer. It has an added "feature": it protects the tow vehicle from harmful shorts or miswiring.

In this case too much current draw if the test above proves right.

You may have to go with lower wattage marker bulbs, such as LED's or use a relay and aux power. I could explain offline.

It could be ground issue but the idea on the auto reset breaker makes sense does the ligts come back on the same way everytime it shuts off

Sorry guys, we took the trailer for its' first outing. All daytime driving. If I leave the "running lights" off everything works fine (brake / turn ) . Yep, this problem repeats consistently. I'm going to move the groung to the frame first, since that is most suspect IMO. Never heard of 'auto reset breaker' but I'm learning fast. Will check that next. Thanks for the input....I'll let you know what happens.
