Matching 5th wheel to hitch
I've got a 15,200lb GVWR 5th wheel. My father in law a 16,300lb 5th wheel. I already have a Curt 20k rated hitch. He does not yet. Hard to find a used hitch like I have right now. There is a 16k rated Curt just like mine available near us. Would the 16k be fine for me or should we continue to look.

I always like to have some extra room. 15,200 for a 16k seems a little too close for me.
I'd keep looking.

Misread, you would already be over, no way I'd do it.

Well I wouldn't be over. My max weight is 15,200. I'd be taking the 16k hitch and my father in law the 20k. I've heard keep some wiggle room but I don't know what that wiggle room is.

How likely are you to max out yor trailer or exceed its GVWR? As it stands you have 800 lbs to play with. If the mfg. didn't think it would handle 16,000lbs they wouldn't have rated it as such. Not saying for certain, but I bet they test at least 10% over rating. Like stated above more is better, but enough is enough.

My Landmark is 18k GVWR and my hitch is 18k. I'm close to if not over GVWR! Why wouldn't they put at least a 20k hitch on there?

Comparing weight ratings can lead to an overloaded hitch, which is not good. As long as the actual weight of your camper does not exceed the weight rating of the hitch, you are golden.

I've had mine scaled at 14,900 so I'm just shy of not GWVR. That's with us full timing the last 2 yrs so I assume after this year our weight will go down when we buy a house.

16K hitch is RATED for 16K......and probably has a 4K pin weight rating also.
At or under 'rating' and hitch is good to go.
