They can both PULL close to the same weight but they are different by what pin weight you can put in the bed of the truck. And yes the 350 has a beefier rear by springs and axle. Take a look at the Ford towing guide here"

Nope; the axles are the same; read the link I posted in post #9

Ford list the axle rating of 6,350 on a F-250 and around 7,300 on a F-350.

This is bogus as I understand the axles to be the same part number.

This helps me some as I do not have to buy a small 5th wheel but can buy a medium small 5th wheel.

From the link I posted:

SRW 350 6.2 motor = Sterling 10.5.
SRW 350 6.7 motor = Dana M275.
Standard 250 with either motor = Sterling 10.5.
HD 250 that only comes with the 6.7 = Dana M275.

There is no difference in either axle based on which truck it's used in. The Sterling in the SRW 350 is 100% identical to the Sterling in the 250. The Dana M275 used in the HD 250 is 100% identical to the Dana in the SRW 350 6.7. The ONLY difference between the two is the spring rate of the spring packs used on them.

He goes on to list the part numbers between the F250 axles and F350 axles which are the same part number.

As in GMC applications and I believe Ram (at least in prior years) the diesel equipped version of the 2500 has the same axle as the 3500. (11.5 aam floating.) along with the Allison transmission. The gas version has the 10.5 aam. The components on the diesel are heavier because of the torque.

My only caveat when purchasing a 350/3500+ is the check the driver's licenses requirement in your state. Its common that some states require a non-commercial class A, or equivalent, when towing a 10,000+ load and the GVWR of the truck and the GVWR trailer total 26,000+. The GVWR of a 3500 combined with the GVWR of many trailers will often get you there.

Starting in 2019 for Dodge and 2020 for GM HD the 3500 srw and dual rear wheel Diesels use a 12" ring gear. the diesel 2500 and gas 3500 still use the 11.5" ring gears, Not a Ford guy so can't say for them.

Actually in pa you don't "have" to pay the extra, you can register your 350 as 10k "4a" 11k 4b" or your gvwr which on my 18 f350 was 11.5k "5". 4a and 4b are the same price and a big reason I was angry with the dealership I bought my 18 f350 at, they registered it as a 4a without even asking me. I can understand not paying the extra $100 for the last 500 lbs but the price was the same between 10k and 11k the only difference is that commercial customers need a dot number over 10k and they knew that I wasn't using the truck commercially. Now that I have the 21 chevy dually I am paying for the weight class 5, boy is that a hit $335 a year, but at least I don't have to worry about payload.

I would say yes to the F350 unless..... You can find a well optioned F250 with the high capacity tow package (10,800) and it still meets the capacity requirements. I found one and got a decent, not great price. My biggest issue was the interior. I didn't want a black interior under any circumstances (I live in Florida). You can find almost any truck the way you want with a black interior for some reason here.... Two things, (1) persistence- look every day and (2) be ready to make a deal and travel if needed.

Dave
I'd be careful about relying on part numbers. I'd stay inbounds with the "Official" Ford towing guide for all specs. (and the CAT scale). I was just going by what my mechanic told me and he works on nothing but, ford fleet trucks.

Good luck on what seems to be a very confusing subject.

I wonder if they have the same wheelbearing on 250 and 350.

You know what the funny thing is. Big 3 know we talk about this for decades and they know we are confused. But they never come out and clarify any of these myths.

If they have the same differential, they have the same bearings. If the part numbers are the same, they are the same.
Someone posted the weight rating are based on a perfect day. That is not correct. Someone else said the weakest links is first the axle and than the tire. That is not correct. By design the OEM tires are the weakest link, if all other components are up to specs. If something goes south because of weight, tire failure is better than axle failure.

Wow, this thread started so right, yep if you have a choice get the F350, best choice.

Why buy a F250 and do a bunch of add on to make like a F350, when the sticker, will never reflect it.
