New 5th Wheel weights/lengths out of control
Is it just me? Are all the new 5th wheel lengths and weights getting to the point you have to have a DRW? I'm not talking about the Ultra Lights, but more of the higher end, full-time. It seems like there use to be a lot more product choice for something in 35' length with a 15,000 GVWR. Everything I'm seeing new on the market are 37' with minimum 17,000 GVWR. I'm not saying you can't use a SRW 1 ton to move some of these, but you are running really close and maybe over the max tow vehicle capabilities once your fully loaded. Add to that the road conditions are almost never ideal, it's risky business. I feel better knowing there is a cushion between what I'm towing and what I can tow.

Especially those big toy hauler 5th wheels. Trucks get more capable and 5th wheels get bigger and heavier. It is a catch 22.
I don't know where it will end but it has to end soon. 5th wheels can only get so big and LDT get get only so capable.

Has anyone seen the new Dutchmen Voltage toyhauler WITH a midbunk? I believe the GVWR is between 18-20k lbs, with a dry weight of over 15k. 43' advertised length, so in reality closer to 45'. It's insane..... Definitely putting a 3500 DRW to work.
Our midbunk Chaparral is 43' and 14.5k GVWR and we thought it was big....

Our 40' HitchHiker Champagne is a bit over 19,000 lb. Thing is people keep wanting more and more stuff in the RV and stuff has a weight. So you either go smaller to get lighter or get a DRW truck if you want to play with Big Boys.

I found several Cedar Creeks and Cardinals 5th wheel trailers that are under 38' long and max gross weight under 16,500 LBS. I am sure there are other 5er's in that range also you just need to look for them.

I dont like pulling much over 17ish with pickups. I dont think they do well enough and by the time youre into a pickup thats capable the ride is dog crap and the cab and chassis trucks are underpowered. I couldnt even maintain 45mph on some 2 lane pennsylvania roads pulling 20k with a newish dodge 5500 with the big tow package.

If my 2021 Ford F350 DRW 4X4, 4.10 gear , 10 spd trans 475 HP, 1050 lbs torque can't pull a 19k when max loaded 5th wheel , well maybe Ford better get out of the truck business, we looked at some MDT 's but they are just not practical , we also will have a 23' TT that we will use for short weekend trip or to get into place our 43' Riverstone won't fit. Just an after thought these Fords are rockets , put it in "sport mode" and put the proverbial spurs to her , very impressive almost scary acceleration !

And yet, Alliance RV is putting two mid profile 5th wheels out this year. One is a 32, the other a 30 footer.

F550 is medium duty and it uses the same body and about the same wheelbase. What isnt practical about a vehicle thats nearly the same size?

The way I understand manufacturers’ ratings is that if, say a tire, is rated for 3750 lbs it has been tested at 3750 lbs and is deemed safe at 3750 lbs. It might be safe at 5000 lbs …. that we don’t know. The mentality of thinking we need a cushion between our load and the manufacturers’ rating seems to assume 3751 lbs is the point at which the tire goes boom.
