New GMC 2500 Diesel SLT has finally arrived

After almost 5 months, the 2022 GMC 2500, SLT, 4by4, diesel, came in last night (Feb 7, 2022), but I won't see it until Thursday afternoon.

I am not fully committed yet, so...., any advice on my inspection before purchase? I have tested many different brand trucks, trim levels, and sizes since this was ordered, and this trim level is just right for me!

1. What can I expect for mpg on this?

2. Any issues with current owners of the 2020 to 2022 GMC 2500, 6.6 Diesel?

3. Is there going to be a DEF shortage, and if so how should I prepare?

One little concern is the overall truck cab height. My garage frame opening height is a maximum of 83" without removing some of the wood trim. the height of this truck is listed as 79.82", but what about the antenna on top of the driver's side cab? Is that higher than the 79.82'?

Any answers and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I guess a nothing would surprise me anymore, even a worldwide shortage of cow piss rendering all our beautiful diesel trucks useless. But last night I saw hundreds of boxes of DEF stacked on pallets in Home Depot if that gives you any comfort.

I'd personally go grab the truck before someone else does and enjoy the crap out of it.

Good advice! They are holding the truck for me, but I know there are others waiting in case I back out!

Don't buy too much DEF in advance. It doesn't store well in heat.
IF I buy in advance, I buy only one and store it in the house in the A/C (Florida).

Good luck with your new truck.

We plan to buy a travel trailer under 30 feet. We have owned motor homes and a travel trailer in the past. We want to downsize to a high quality camper, between 25-29 feet, with one slide out, new, or a few years old.

A fifth wheel would also work, but I haven't found any in the 25-29 foot category that is new or close to new.

We are currently looking at Grand Design, KZ, Lance, and a few others. It will just be for the 2 of us and occasionally a grandkid or two.

I wouldn't worry about a deff shortage. Buy it from any truck stop where you know its always fresh and not paying the "stupid" box prices ..

Mine is a Chev. LTZ 3500 and not GMC, but everything should be about the same.

MPG- I am seeing from 15 to 20 empty and on a recent trip with the 16,000# toy hauler I saw a 9.4 and a 10.8 on two fill up's hand calculated.

DEF- have seen it on shelves at Walmart, AutoZone, O'Rielly's, etc. Don't over buy, it does not have a long storage life from what I hear. Also you can always get it at your local dealer.

Issues- Currently I have about 7,000 miles on mine with no issues. Everything seems to work like it should.

Truck height- mine goes in a standard garage door, but it is close. I do have the Z71 package that might make it a little higher but if it is a real issue, the dealer should let you take on a test drive to see.

It's ok. Let me qualify that comment.
We bought a 2021 model year and it was perfect. Fit and finish was good, everything worked like it should.
We got T-boned when it was 7 months old and insurance totaled it.

We had replacement coverage so they got us a 2022 model year.

This trailer is crap quality. Fit and finish sucks, I've already fixed some drawers and re-stapled a wall. Door doesn't fit quite right, they put some lower quality components on it probably due to supply shortages. All 4 tires had to be replaced under warrantee.
All in all, not a completely happy camper but it is what it is.

We have one in the family and our friends also have one and both are way nicer than our Winnebago 2500RL. We really enjoy our 2500RL and have got good use out of it for the past 6 years but the quality of the ORV's is quite a bit above. If we ever need another TT it will be an ORV.

Update on new truck

I changed my mind and decided to buy a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, 4by4, SLT, 3.0 diesel instead of the 2500 that I ordered.

I really don't need the 2500 since my future travel trailer will weigh about 5000 pounds.

And I love the mpg! I drove it from Ft Collins to Denver today and averaged about 26.5 mpg, with most speeds around 70-75. This is mainly a daily driver around town with some long trips with or without a travel trailer.

It has a nice and quiet ride, and looks nice also. It has the White Frost Tricoat exterior with a Dark Walnut Slate interior. Thanks to all for helping me with my search. The next purchase will be the Travel Trailer.
