hi,
our son is in iraq and will be home soon. we would like to drive from iowa to florida to see him.
we have a dakota 1/2 ton pickup.
locally i found a 21 ft wilderness fifth wheel that i think would work for us.it is a 93.it has a new awning.it looks clean,i looked at it today.dh and i will look at it again tonight.
i'm not sure if the asking price of $4000 is a good buy. i have been all over this internet and can not find any info on small pickup camper prices.i would like a truck camper to fit the 6 foot box.
does any one have info?
since i started this message we have looked at this 5th wheel again.
it has had a leak over the bed.so that means replacing some of the ceiling.how much of a job would that be?
it does not have a hitch so we would have to buy that also.
thanks jhosta.

jhosta,

Welcome to iRV2, we're really glad to have you here as a new member and are looking forward to reading your posts about your RVing experiences and adventures. You'll find a great bunch of folks on this site who are very knowledgeable of RVing, the rigs we use, and the places we go in them.

I suggest you first find out the trailer tow rating for your Dakota and secondly find out how much the loaded weight of the Wilderness will be. I have a hunch that the little Wilderness might create a towing challenge for the Dakota. Run the numbers and find out before you buy.

Again, welcome to iRV2, we're glad you joined.

Also, check Nadaguides.com for the model of the trailer you are considering. 1993 values are available on the site. This will help you decide if the $4000 is a fair price.

Welcome to iRV2.com!

Be very cautious about that leak. It could mean very serious wood rot and / or frame damage if it has been leaking awhile. I believe that model has 2x2 wood framing members. If any of those are rotted, stay away from that trailer. When you find your weight ratings, be advised that a 6 foot bed will most likely require a slider hitch, which will weigh more and cost more than non-slider hitches.

I would be very careful about roof leaks. I had a TT one time that developed a leak above the fridge. The water ran down the inside of a cabinet and rotted the floor. Water has funny way of finding its way into places you would never think of. Make sure you check it very well for soft spots everywhere nexto, above, and below where the leak was.
