New trailer jerking on acceleration

Hi, we picked up our new trailer yesterday, first time towing with a gooseneck, previously towed bumper pull.

We are getting a distinct jerk sensation on acceleration, worse when on bumpy roads. We backed the electric trailer brakes right off and toggled the haul function on and off and it made no difference.

Car is fine when not towing.

Is it the coupling ? The transmission ? Your ideas appreciated

Gooseneck?

What kind of 'Ball' set up do you have in truck?

OR did you mean 5th wheel hitch vs gooseneck?

What year/brand/model is trailer?

What 5th hitch are you using?
When I bought our 1st 5th wheel I cheap'd out and made a deal for a used Reese 5th hitch. Every time I stopped then pulled away it jerked. After one season I junked the Reese and bought a B&W. Problem solved.
FWIW I tried lowering the gain on the TBC too and it made no difference.

Assuming you have a short bed truck and assuming you have a auto sliding 5th wheel hitch . A small bump any be felt because of all the moving parts in the hitch. I would say it's about the same as someone jumping into the bed of the truck when you don't expect it. is all this true? then it maybe the normal for a light truck and a sliding hitch. this is the reason why many of us have 8' bed truck and heavy spec trucks for towing.

I can see 1 jerk when you start from a standstill. But then it should be smooth. They make all kinds of hitches with air bladders or rubber cushions to reduce the chucking. You could switch the pin box to a cushioned design. Check out a Reese Goosebox replacement pin box just for an example. I had a Moryde pin box that reduced chucking.

Good luck

Unless it's a typo your truck is probably the issue. A RAM 1500 with a gooseneck ball? Seriously?

A trailer that size and weight is likely severely overloading the truck, and bags are just screaming to keep the truck driveable.

Oh lordy.....'nother question with little information as always leads to wild opinions/speculating.

My guess ...sounds like a GN ball in the trucks bed with a 5th wheel/GN adapter. Not the best setup for a small trailer that size which may not have enough structure to eliminate added stress to the hitch mount area from a GN adapter. This type setup can lead to chucking issues.

Maybe we will have some more info.

Another 1500 Ram with the rear coils posted that his truck had a severe shudder under hard acceleration with a load. The issue was drive line shudder which the dealer fixed under warranty.

Well I don't know how much it changes, but the OP is from the land down under, Australia. do they have a 3' ball or is metric to imperial conversion rounded from 2-5/8"? Pictures would be a big help.

And his trailer is a Gooseneck horse trailer with quarters.

But not sure which one as the ones shown are 4500kg (9900#)
