New truck?
I am interested in getting a new truck to tow our toy hauler and as a general use truck. I currently have a 2007 Ford F250 Supercab with a 5.4 liter engine. My wife and I are considering two trucks - a Ram 3500 Crew cab with a diesel engine or one with the 6.4 liter Hemi. We both would rather have the diesel, but there is about a $7000 difference which is quite a lot of money. I am interested in hearing from anyone with either of these trucks and how well you like it, whether you wished you had bought something else, etc.

The diesel will tow more without breaking a sweat and probably deliver better mileage doing it.
The $7,000 you spend now will carry through till you sell the vehicle; you may not get all of it back but 5 to 7 years down the road the diesel will have higher resale than the gas.
My last tow vehicle was a 2000 Dodge 4X4 with a V-10 a capable tow vehicle , that I used for 5 years , when I sold it diesel trucks with the same other equipment were selling for $4,000 more. Diesel was a $5,200 option in 2000.

Step up and get the diesel. You won't regret it!

I have a smaller travel trailer, and the diesel allows me to easily accelerate while pulling up hills at high altitude. Then I can use the exhaust brake to descend and not touch the brake pedal. It was worth the extra for the modem oil burner!

As a voice from yesteryear, I don't know much about the new diesels.
We used 11.5' TC's from the late '70's, often towing, until about two years ago when we got a MH. We made one cross country trip (OR to WV) with a gas powered truck back then, and it wasn't long after that I converted a '69 F250 4X4 to diesel using a 6-354 Perkins diesel engine. There were no good commercial diesel powered pickups available at the time. We ran the Ford until '93 when we bought a '89 Dodge W250 Cummins. That was the first year for Dodge/Cummins. We ran it for the next 23 years and 286k miles. If I were going to buy another truck for serious cross country travel/work it would be a diesel. If it were just to be used locally I'm not sure it would make that much difference.
Before buying I would do some research to find out which diesel was best, and which would best fit my needs.
Just my 2c. Best of luck with the choice.
Steve

We made a decision. I called and left a voicemail for the sales person that we would purchase the diesel truck. Now, to pay for it!

You didn't really say how much hauling you planned on doing, but all of the comment appear valid. You will enjoy towing with the CTD truck. Optioned properly and maintained the premium CTD package will carry to the bottom line upon resale.
It doesn't take many purchases to realize that an incorrect bargain's luster fades to soon. The correct tool for a job carries value long after it's paid for.
Be well.

No matter what you tow a diesel has better performance. It is just a question of when you need it. Heavy loads obviously, lighter not so much. I usually buy what I like.

It all depends on what you intend to pull, how far, and how often. In my case, I opted for a gasser with 4:10 gears with no regrets. Diesels are made to pull but the DEF systems greatly impact the performance and maintenance. One thing to consider is the payload is reduced by 600-800lbs with the diesel as well. Good luck on your choice, neither is wrong.

I have had no issues with the DEF system... and the truck performs great!

Well that's great! I have never had a slide issue either. Let's count ourselves lucky. Plenty have.

I agree some have issues with them for sure but it is my belief that the frequency of issues in trucks used to tow once in as while is far overstated on internet forums... just trying to provide balance... to often we only hear the complaints.
