Newbie trying to decide on 3/4 ton gasser

Hi,
I don't currently own a RV but have rented some locally and like the idea of renting for the time I need then turning back in to the owner. That way, I don't have to deal with storage, maintenance, insurance, etc. I'm thinking of upgrading to a 3/4 ton truck and prefer the GM brands. My current truck is a GMC Canyon with not a lot of payload and towing capability.

I'm trying to decide between the 2020 GM 2500 with the new 6.6L gas engine and the 2019 (leftover new old stock at the dealerships) 2500 with the 6.0L gas engine. My budget is under $50K new. I can step up to a higher package (i.e. LT) with the 2019 but would have to settle for the "custom" trim if I go with the 2020.

So, has anyone driven and or towed with both the previous gen and the current gen GM 2500HD? This will also be my daily driver to work in an urban area about 15 miles one way. Not interested in the expense and maintenance of a diesel.

GM improved a lot on the redesigned truck. More cross members on the frame to make it more solid. I think they also improved the cooling with a larger radiator on the 2020. I test drove the 6.6 gas GM trucks and give it a big [emoji106]. It drives better than my good driving 2017 6.2 Boss F-250.

Here is a video of the GM 6.6 towing:

It's been a few years since I bought my truck but back in 2014 I found I got A LOT more for my money with Ram. You can get a nicely optioned one with the new 8spd tranny for under 50K.

My previous truck was a Chevy Silverado Duramax (loved it!) and before that an F150 (liked it okay). So, I'm really not a fanboy for any brand.

Between the two choices given I'd take the newer engine in a lower trim level but that's really just a personal choice.

Here's a sample of a 50K-ish Ram:

Thanks guys (or ladies). A lot of good responses here. I'm not sure if the dealerships are still allowing test drives in the age of Covid-19. In reality, I need to test drive both and see which one feels better.

The 2019 would be a double cab and the 2020 would be a crew cab. I just worried that the crew cab would have trouble fitting in my garage. My boys are still toddlers so not worried about them being cramped in the rear seat.

I just found this comical because people like to brag on how much more truck you get with a dodge then get mad when its pointed out how cheaply theyre made.

I always prefer to go a couple years older to get nicer amenities and id never buy a first year vehicle. Id either wait another year or get a leftover 19.

Get a short bed. A short bed crew cab will still fit in a normal parking space. A long bed won't.

The 2019 is less powerful than my 2017 F-250 gasser. A 2020 GM 6.6 gas is more powerful than my truck.

You really need to test drive all the gas trucks and pick the one you like best. This includes Ram and Ford.

I am thinking you can buy a 2020 F-250 XLT 6.2 gas engine for 50k. That means you should be able to buy the GM of the Ram for the same 50k.

For people that say the 2019 trucks are as good as the 2020 trucks have not test driven the 2020's. Example - in the 2020 Ford rides better with lighter steering than the 2019. That makes the truck much easier to live with as a daily driver.

LOL ! Still stuck in the 80's i see. There is a reason they have outsold chevy the past two years in a row. FCA has put a ton of money into there R&D for the past 5 years and it really shows with there latest high quality offerings. And no, i dont own ANY of them but have been a tech thats been working on them for the past 40 years. The only thing comical is your post

You can buy a 2020 with a dsl and stay under $50k. If you shop you can get a better trim pkg in the 2020 with gas for under $50k.

Agreed. Some people would rather walk down the road carrying a Chevy hubcap than ride in a Dodge.

Now is definitely the time to buy. I would get the 2019 and have no regrets. I have a 2017 with the 6.0 and a 6.5' bed it pulled my 13k 5'er fine and it is a workhorse. I also happen to think the 2020's are ugly lol.
