Newbie TT with 1/2 ton truck

We are looking at combo 2021 ram 1500 5.7 hemi 4x4 crewcab with Winnebago 2427rb.

While I dig through the many discussions on my own, perhaps some of the many experts can advise if this is reasonable.

Normally just spouse and I, two small dogs, two bicycles.

That is a Winnebago Voyage with 3,940 lbs. of cargo capacity and a GVWR of 10,400 lbs. Add to the dry weight full propane and battery so you are around 6,500lbs empty.

Two people, two small dogs, two bicycles will really be pushing your truck.

What is the 'occupant and cargo capacity should never exceed xxxx kilos xxxx pounds' number on your driver's side door?

6,500 lbs. is my towing limit for most 150/1500 series trucks. The Winnebago Voyage is also 8' wide with a high profile for a travel trailer. It will catch a lot of wind.

If you are only going to go to local state parks using back roads where the speed limit is 45 mph you will be ok.

But if you want to drive on the highways at 70 - 72 mph with wind and semi trucks I would advise against that too big trailer. Your truck will have a difficult time controlling it. I see trailer sway which is not fun.

I had to check the specs, but wow! That's a heavy trailer...

The empty tongue weight is 660#...

OP's gonna want to double that number when loaded for proper balance and stability...

So, 1200# on the tongue... (12-15% of the weight on the tongue)...

And what is the cargo capacity of the truck?

The trailer isn't overly long at <28ft so weathervaning won't be as strong as a longer trailer.

Cargo capacity is my biggest concern...

Agree with the cargo capacity of the Ram. I have not looked since last year but 1,300 to 1,500lbs. is what I remember. If that is the case then that travel trailer is way too heavy.

And just an FYI - I looked at a 2020 Ford F-150 XLT with a payload of 2,125 lbs. Also the newer GM 1500 series trucks I have seen payloads of 1,800 - 2,100lbs.

I think Winnebago is no longer building the Mini Plus line and is now building the even bigger Voyage line.

What they said; I also have a 25' and 6500lb max "line in the sand" for half tons - this trailer is far beyond what I would tow with a 1500 - almost 28' long and a 10,400 lb GVWR. loaded weight will be at least 7500 lbs and probably more like 8,000.....well into 3/4 ton territory IMO.

Ram payloads are higher with the new Gen trucks.

https://www.ramtrucks.com/BodyBuilde...ONjPJTiLoD5%0A
Granted theses are payloads for a Tradesman trim. In SLT or slightly higher payloads should be around 1500-1750.

With a 900 lb tongue weight and at 27'9" I don't see any issues if you pack light keeping the TT weight around 7,000 lbs.
A good WDH with built in sway control is a must.

My '21 f150 with the 302a package can do 1875#.

I haven't looked at door stickers on '21 Rams, but the 2020 I looked at last year was less than 1500... (It did have the glass sunroof)

My son's 2012 Laramie is only good for 975(!), Which is the same as my daughter's Chevy Sonic... Which I tease him about, quite often...

I knew the Ram payload was low but 975 lbs? That is pitiful for a full sized truck. The same as a Sonic, that is funny.

Another truck with low payloads is the regular Nissan Titan With payloads of under 1,400lbs on most of the ones I looked at. The Titan XD is basically a different truck with bigger frame and longer wheelbase and payloads of 1,900 to 2,200lbs.

Dodge/Ram trucks had a pretty low payload for a long time - allowed them to have a more cushy ride is what I was told. Guess a half ton truly was just a half ton. I once went out with a guy in a Ram truck to pick up rocks for a landscape project. He had his half ton Ram, I had a Tahoe. I loaded more weight in my Tahoe with a tarp down in the back than he loaded in his Ram. (In that year model, the 3rd row seating on the Tahoe got you larger rear disk brake rotors and a higher payload. )

My understand is that the new Rams are a bit better on the payload.

My 2020 Silverado 1500 actually has a payload over 2K according to the GM specs.

I am a Ford guy but really like the new GM 1500 series trucks. When I looked at them it was easy to find a nice one with over 2,000lbs of payload. The 2019 redesign GM hit a homerun IMHO. They are now a lot bigger.

The down side is they really need a new engine to replace the old 5.3. Ford's 5.0L Coyote engine is now 10 years old but still is peppy. The 5.3 not very peppy. It makes more noise then acceleration IMHO. In my test drive I expected much more acceleration.

The Ram 5.7 was peppy. Acceleration was good.

Looks like the entire Voyage series from 27 ft right on up to 39 ft all have the same 10,400 lb gross weight. You will probably never reach gross in the one you are looking at but it is too much trailer for the truck.

Thank you

Thank you for all the prompt help.

Based on this good advice I'll be movin' on up to a 2500. Make some dealer happy, probably make my truck easier to find, and likely make my navigator more comfortable first time we merge onto freeway.

good call; all the discussion around whether this or that half ton has a hundred or two hundred lb better payload just reinforces the idea that it's best not to cut things that fine. JMHO.

Cheers,
Dave

Even with a half ton truck with 1,800 payload still would not be good to tow that trailer. You need inceased wheelbase just as much as weight carrying ability.
