Do you believe that would be a suitable truck for the OP’s 5er?

I'm thinking there might be some screaming deals on 2021 pickups as soon as this chip shortage gets straightened out. The auto companies don't like selling year old models and they've got lots of them sitting in parking lots waiting on chips. When the chips arrive they will want those trucks gone. Just my considered opinion from living in and around Detroit for 65 years.

GM just announced the temporary closure of a few plants, at least 2 of which build trucks. There may not be an abundance of 2022’s.

Yes, I think that 2022 GM 2500 truck would tow a small 5th wheel. The OP will want one with the 5th wheel prep package. The OP also keeps his truck for 20 years so buy a new truck does make sense.

Just picked up a 19 Silverado 3500. Trucks are not cheap and like you said a pile of cash. Look around and be willing to travel. I bought a plane ticket to get it back n the right deal. They are out there but you have to put in the work to find them but still, your not going to score a killer deal.

However I don’t anticipate buying a new truck for the next 18 but this one will last for all the camping trips my little one can handle.

inthepines;

I believe I recommended he look at replacing his 1/2 ton with a one ton. I don't believe I recommended a new one. However if a new one is on the horizon, the base models are much lower than the loaded ones. And a base one ton diesel is cheaper than a loaded 1/2 ton gasser. It's hard to find a low mile used diesel but they are out there.

It may indeed. Currently, the OP only has a “small” 5er on paper.

If we define small as something the truck that was just purchased can tow, then a small 5er can be found to fit the bill. Narrow the search down to a couple of trailer options, then go truck shopping. It’s less costly to buy the right truck on the first try than it is to buy the right truck on the second try.

The gas GM 2500 series trucks will have a payload of around 3,500lbs. Especially if they have the higher GVWR. And especially a truck that is not loaded options.

I have a RAM 2500 Diesel and it has the prep package for a 5th wheel. I’m at Ft Wilderness now and there are plenty of 5th wheels here towed by 2500s. That said, I’m towing a 25’ Airstream and really don’t want to ever tow anything bigger. If you’re thinking 5th wheel, even the smallest, lightest ones on the market, get a 1 ton truck. Even single rear wheels. You can grow into bigger 5th wheels if that’s where things take you.

And oh yea, truck prices. My son has my 2009 Tundra long bed. 150k on it and I’d definitely say it’s in “rough” condition (runs fine but the paint and interior are showing their age). KBB and NADA are showing avg trade in at $9500 to $11k. Just unbelievable.

Another data point. My son found a new Tundra with the 5.7-8cylander. With the $10 k premium the dealer is putting on it it’s almost as much as my 2500 Laramie RAM diesel. Just insane.

I had originally considered a used class A but after considering the initial cost, maintenance and complexity, went for a new truck and 5th wheel. After a trip to Colorado from Florida and back, I think it was the right decision for us. Yes, these new trucks a crazy expensive but what's that alternative? Stay home? I plan to retire in the next year or so and travel half the year. After that's done I can sell the truck and recoup some of the cost. The trailer may be a bit harder with the flood of used units that is expected.

Unfortunately, the market for used is almost as bad as the new. Figure in availability, financing, etc. and you're stuck with limited options. I had originally planned on an F250 but when a lightly used F350 came on the market, I jumped on it fast. Between the time I called the salesman, sent funds to secure the sale, he had 13 phone calls inquiring about the same truck. Crazy. Moral of the story, persistence and ability to move fast. Good luck.

100% agree!!!!!!

a 250/2500 diesel can only deal with about a 10,000 lb GVW 5th wheel due to pin weight.

a single wheel one ton 350/3500 can handle up to about 14,000 lb GVW trailer.

A duel wheel truck one ton 350/3500 is good for about 21,000lb 5th wheel

Its assumed that a 5th wheel trailer loaded to travel is going to put roughly 22% of its GVW right over the rear axle of your truck. Most diesel 4x4 crew cab duel wheel trucks have a payload rating around 5400lbs +~- . You need to factor the weight of your hitch, you wife, dog, beer ,etc. in the truck.

DO NOT use the manufactures dry shipping pin weights for buying a truck. My trailer has 1200lbs more pin weight loaded then the shipping weight!

full timers most likely will need a duel wheel truck and a trailer that has a GVW over 16,000 lbs.

For what its worth there are 2 one ton duel wheel trucks in my area on the lot , they are like finding a needle in a hay stack.

one is a Ram nicely equiped priced at $80,200 at Tasca Ram in Johnston RI.(on the lot)
one is a GMC nicely equiped priced at $76,995 being shipped to Tulleys GMC in Mass

About $50k to $60k more than I will ever be willing to spend on a work tool... er fashion statement.

I could buy a much older 1 ton, put a new engine, trans, rebuild suspension, new interior and paint and still come out saving $50+ k.

I just can't bring myself to have a mortgage payment for a truck.

Some folks like to buy new, and they can afford to do so. Nothing wrong with that. If no one bought new vehicles, you wouldn’t be able to buy a project vehicle.

As someone mentioned previously, they want a truck with a warranty and they don’t want to become a mechanic.

I rented a like new 2022 Class C last week and after doing the math decided that a new 70K+ 2021 F-150 King Ranch 4x4 with 3.5 Eco, Max Tow Pkg, trailer mirrors, No sunroof, and sprayed Bedliner with 1599# payload made more sense to me. It's more than enough to tow a 6K trailer in comfort and I have a new warranty.
