Oly1: Sorry about the mishap with your RV.

To measure the pin weight, get a weight of the truck and trailer combo, and then a weight of the truck w/o the trailer (doesn't matter which you do first). The difference between the two is the pin weight. Try to get the weights with the same configuration, i.e. same fuel, passengers, cargo, etc.

The method Ken recommended is what I use. When I take my 5er in for service, there is a DOT Weigh Station about 4 miles before the exit. I weigh the combo on the way there, and the truck on the way home without the trailer. I've never had a scale tell me no, especially when you tell them "I just want to make sure I'm under my rated weights". I've always believed the hitch weight is not part of the pin weight, because the hitch stays in the truck and is part of the trucks weight figure not the 5ers. Mike

I assume you mean the weight of the truck connected to the trailer but with the trailer wheels not on the scales for the weight of the truck to subtract from the total weight. Otherwise the math would not make sense.

allendp: Right you are. My method as posted would yeild the total weight of the trailer.
