Possible Next TV - 3/4 Ton Gasser

I am currently towing a 6K loaded TT with a 2013 Ford Expedition EL. Had serious stability issues the first year and fixed them via 3 primary changes:
1) Tighten the Andersen WDH
2) Install a hitch bracket to take the play out of the receiver
3) Change from P-series tires to LT's

I am thinking our next RV will be a 5th wheel and PU combo. Based on my brother-in-law doing well with his GMC 2500HD gasser and a Jayco Eagle HT, I may aim for a similar pairing. This past season I was able to ask a fellow camper about his F250 gasser with 5th wheel combo. His truck was very new and I learned he started with a PSD and didn't keep it because of what he'd have to budget for maintenance. I've read discussions here about how that may be a wash, so I won't dig in.

My local Ford dealer finally had some stock on hand for 2019 F250 SD gassers, so I asked them to send me a photo of the yellow sticker from one I selected. I'm sharing it here since seeing verified current payload information on the forum may be helpful to others. Unless situations change, my current combo needs to last at least one more season.

Best regards,
Chris

I have a 2017 F-250 6.2 Lariat with the Lariat Ultimate package 2WD with locking Rear diff. I have a occupant / cargo capacity of 3,497lbs. so your sticker is in-line. A 2WD Ram with the 6.4 liter Hemi had a occupant / cargo capacity of 3,300lbs. The Ram had the 5th wheel prep package.

If you have time to search, conventional wisdom says to buy a F-350 with the gasoline powered engine.

In 2020 Chevy, Ram and Ford will have all new, more powerful gasoline engines. The new redesigned Chevy 2500 is expected July 2019.

The 2020 models will most likely have more capacity as each iteration of trucks have done in the past.

I like the looks of the 2020 Chevy 2500 but a lot of others do not. Google 2020 Chevy 2500 to see what comes up today. Both Ford and Ram are expected to have new gas powered engines in the 7.x litre range.

Not sure if this helps or not but I have had a number of the v-10 triton engines in personal and my construction vehicles. Never had the spark plug problem some had. They are thirsty engines. I got 12-13 mpg empty and 10 towing three horse trailers loaded or construction equip. I get 11 mpg towing a 24’ TT @5000 lbs in my 5.0 f150 for comparison.

I love my 6.2 F250. It's a 4x4 so about 400 pounds less payload but it has plenty of power and tows great. The Tow/Haul mode gives you some help holding speed downhill and the brake controller is very smooth.

I think unless you are towing way more than 8 or 10,000 pounds or are not planning on using it for a daily driver then a diesel may not be the best choice. I drive mine everyday with a lot of in town driving so diesel would be problematic and frankly just not necessary for the 8000 pounds I tow.

I am sure there is a point where it begins to make more sense to go diesel but for me that would require an F350 to get even more capacity anyway.

I will add, my rock solid, quiet riding F-250 6.2 is the best truck I have owned I think. My 2012 F-450 diesel was close but the F-250 drives better.

Makes me wonder how much better the 2020 models can be. More powerful gas engines will be interesting.
