Price Negotiation ?

For those of you that may have recently bought a new to you truck. Do you guys go in thinking you are going to have to pay full asking price or are you able to negotiate down from that. I have been looking at a new to me truck but I am not sure if the prices I see are negotiable or if they are set in stone.

Went to look at a 2016 GMC Base 2500 with 74,000 miles on the clock and the dealer would not budge even 500 dollars. It was a nice looking truck and appeared to be in good condition but my concern was getting stuck out in the middle of nowhere. Tried to get the dealer to agree to them throwing in a extended warranty or coming down 1500 dollars and I ended up telling the sales person thanks for your time.

So, bottom line question is this; Is it just me or do dealers no longer negotiate?
Thanks in advance for all your help.

74K Miles on a four year old truck and the dealer won't move on the price? You did the right thing by walking away.

Well a 2016 is more like a 3 to 3.5 year old truck, and 74k is a lot of miles. It also depends on the asking price, if correct for the condition then I would understand.
That said we got both a price reduction on our 2016 Ram 3500 Laramie DRW along with a better than offered trade on our car. The Ram only had 27,500 miles when bought 12/31/2018.

You can use KBB online to get an approx value of any used vehicle plus I think car gurus also might help establish a value.

Once you have an established value you will feel better when negotiating.

To give you an example I traded in a truck. They gave me $39,000 in trade-in and sold that truck in 3 days for $42,000. They listed the truck for $45,999. You are dealing with sales people that do this for a living. They will whine that they are not making enough money blah blah blah.

There are thousands of used trucks for sale.

Here is a great deal on a new 2019 truck.

Had the same issue last year on a used car at a dealership, zero movement. I’ve bought 4 cars for the same sales guy there, but we couldn’t close this one. My guess is they either had a full price offer on the table or they know what they can get at auction for it so no need to budge on the price.

Its a great time to get a 2019 2500 with a Duramax new on closeout with the new 2020s hitting the streets if you can swing the up front hit. The used ones command too much money compared to new. Diesel trucks are about the only vehicle I'll consider buying new because they just don't price depreciate like cars and suvs.

Sometimes dealers budge.... sometimes not. There used to be "ad cars" that were basically lost leaders to get you on the lot. There really is no standard.

It also depends on the dealership. Carmax-they aren't moving an inch. That's just their business model. I find the dealers with the highest fees tend to move a lot more. A place that advertises no fees pretty much sticks to the price, although I've never heard of a used car (other than Carmax) where they wouldn't move even $500.

I just checked CarGurus and I agree with jjack. Used 2018 Chevy 2500HD LTZ diesels were around 52k to 54k. The new Chevy 2500HD LTZ I posted has a MSRP of 66k and is discounted 14k making it 52k.

You can buy a used 2018 with 25,000 miles for the same price.

Cars and SUV's lose 50% of their value in 5 years. Trucks don't seem lose as much.

Oh - here is more of my story on my deal. The dealership offered me 32k for my trade-in. I said I can get 39k for it. In 15 seconds they said they will give me 39k. They tried to steal my trade-in. Again dealerships are in the business to make money and trying to low ball trade-ins is part of the game.

This dealership did whine blah blah blah, we are not making any money on this deal when in fact they made at least 5k.

I would take 52-54k for my 2018 GMC SLT and then go get a new one, except it wouldn't be a GMC.

What was frustrating to me was the fact that I was sitting with the salesperson and had a print out from either KBB or Carfax stating that a fair price was 2.5k below what they were asking and I was only asking for 1.5k off.

Well all I can do is keep looking and hope that I can find 1 that I think is a good deal.

Oh, I felt trapped at the dealership since i gave them the keys to look at my trade-in. And this was about the 40th vehicle I have bought so I know the ropes.

I once looked at a car, test drove it then said thanks for your time. From there I called and made an offer. After 3 weeks of me calling and asking if they want to sell the car they finally accepted my offer which was 2k less then they wanted.

I need to try that again.

Sounds like you had the right info and were ready to buy. I too find it odd they did not accept your offer. Again, there are thousands of trucks out there.

I would love to try that but used trucks sell rather quick here. Not sure why since that truck was in the middle of Louisville and I live in the middle of Lexington. Maybe I will call later in the week if I see the truck has not sold.
