Ram 3500 dually MPG
Very specific issue which is what is the MPG difference in a late model Ram 3500 dually diesel with the 3.42 vs 4.10 differentials. I'm looking at a 2017 used dually. That issue is not critical but if there is a significant difference it will affect my search criteria. The towing difference is 10,000# but I don't expect to need that additional CCC. But who knows what is in the future. Truck won't be a daily driver but we figure our trips to be 5-10K miles towing and usually another 2-3K touristing. 2-3 trips like that annually plus a couple shorter local ones.
Truck is a Laramie Longhorn 2017 and pretty nicely equipped and lower mileage.

Not your specific question , but I split the difference and went with 3.73. Towing 10k was 10-12 depending on speed. Now towing 15k and dropped to 9-10. Typically 16 empty , 19 if I keep it below 65mph.

3.42 here. Depends where we tow. 15k 5th wheel on flat land-12.5, hilly terrain-11, mountains-8.5. Going though Wyoming with a tail wind for 35 miles-26. That was cool. Empty I'll get 14city. 20 hwy at 70mpg. 18 at 75. 22 at 65. Been coast to coast both southern route and northern route as well as the truck being my daily driver so I'm very aware of my mpg.

DCarver,
How does she hold speed in the mountains, where you're getting 8.5? Are you managing to stay close to the speed limit towing the fiver or are you down in the "truck lane" doing 30!
Also, what year and transmission Ram is that? The year and transmission make a lot of difference on the horsepower and torque!
Thanks!
Kate

With my 2012 3500 Dually which was pre-DEF I got around 8 average towing a 15.5K toy-hauler. Empty as I remember 15+-. I think I had the 3.73 gears but truck is long gone. My understanding that current DEF models get about 1mpg more. Guess that's the tradeoff for the hassle and cost of the stuff.

My 2012 DRW with 4.10 gets 10 towing and 15 empty. Empty means a full 90 gallon transfer tank an tool box.
