Short or long bed?

I plan to buy a new or used GMC or Chevy three-quarter ton diesel in the next month or so. I prefer the crew cab with a short bed, do I need a long bed if Im towing a 34 foot Grand Design SOLITUDE 5th wheel? I also plan to buy Hensley air bag hitch.

Well that solitude will likely have a GVWR of 16,000#+ so you should be looking a na one ton and possibly a one ton DRW GM had low payload capacity a couple years ago.

Save yourself some grief and get a long bed so you don’t need to deal with a slider hitch.

For that trailer, 1-ton or larger with a long bed. Have fun.

Frequent, long distance or occasional towing?
I personally can't stand long beds but it depends on what you really need to do with it that matters.
If going used... look for a 2005-06 LLY or a 2007-08 LBZ. The LBZ is the preferred but hard to find engine.

You will have more stability with a long bed than a short bed. Nicer ride quality also.

You prefer short beds, but if you hare going to be doing much towing, you may end up NOT liking the short bed.

A short bed crew cab truck looks better to me. But you get a longer wheelbase which helps improve the ride with the 8' bed. Remember at one time all trucks had an 8' bed.

Also with some brands you get a lager fuel tank with the 8' bed.

Oh the main advantage of the 8' bed is no worry on hitting the cab with the 5th wheel front edges.

I use my truck for much more than towing, and would not even consider a short bed. That is just my preference and need not be yours, of course.

The single best feature of my current truck is the 48-gallon tank. Second best gesture is the nice ride form that long wheelbase.

A 3/4 ton will be overloaded with a GD Solitude. Go 1 ton LB. I've had both over the years and am on my 3rd in a row LB. I have about 3.5'+ from the back of the cab to the front of a 5th hitch. Plenty of room for a large 5th wheel style low profile tool box.
If you go short bed you'll have just over 2' from the bed to hitch. Enough for some stuff but not all that much.
No slider is required for an LB either.

Either works fine.
I have a long bed one ton DRW but it doesn't tow my 5er.
I prefer crew cab short bed trucks pulling my various 5th wheel ....GN trailers....bumper pull trailers.
The truck wheel base determines how it rides not the bed length.
Your trailer may have the rounded/notched front corners made for short bed trucks.

Don't be fooled by those high gvwr based payloads. Using it as pin weight can overload some trucks rawr (tire...wheel...rear spring packs).
Used 3/4 ton truck (gas or diesel) can have a 6000 lb up to 6200 lb rawr . Its maxed out at around 3000-3100 lbs in the bed as pin weight from a 5th wheel trailer
New Ram and Fords have a 6390 rawr for maybe 3200 lb load in the bed.
New gen GM 3/4 tons have up to 6600 rawr and close to 3500 lbs in the bed payloads.

And the bed length tends to determine the wheel base. I went from a 145" long bed regular cab RWD to a 163" extended cab long bed 4WD and the ride was a whole lot better, As always YMMV.

1 ton DRW CC is more stable than the 3/4 ton but if you plan to keep the truck in your garage it may be too long. Long bed gives you more room for storage or an extra fuel tank.

I like the 6'-9" bed of my F350 Tremor. It's a good compromise
but then I don't tow a 5er. You definitely need a one ton.

Do you want the truck to fit in your garage? Think about it and measure. A long bed will not fit in our garage. Now the slider hitch isn't that a big deal. You can buy the one you have to flip for close parking, which I sometimes use, or you can buy an automatic that moves back as yohu turn.
