Sorry, I know this has been beat to death but I still need help

I've pored over so many posts here, and as soon as I think I've got the towing capacity thing figured out I realize I don't, and I've had no luck with the "calculators" online. I'm about to buy a TT, and am checking for opinions out of an abundance of caution.

My TV: 2009 Tundra Crewmax 5.7 w/ Tow Package

GVWR-7200
Towing Capacity-10,100
GCWR- 16,000
FAWR- 4000
RAWR- 4150
Curb weight of truck - 5200 (+/-, can't get a straight answer from Toyota)

TT I plan to buy in the next couple days:

2008 Jayco Jayflight G2 27BHS

GVWR: 7500
Dry Weight: 4988
Tongue Weight: 615
Length: 28.5ft back to tongue.

I think I've given all the pertinent info here, I of course will be getting a WDH.

Thanks for the opinions, as I can really use the advice. I keep trying to do the math, but still not sure.

Thanks again,
Dave

No problem. You will have plenty of safety margin.

I have towed a 5,500lb 26' TT with a 1/2 ton truck no problem. It was a comfotable drive. That being said I think you will also have a comfotable combination.

Looks like it will be fine by the numbers, but I'm not a 1/2 ton fan. Might be OK on flatland. Let us know how it works for you.

My vote is OK too. My numbers are similar and we're good. Make sure to carefully adjust the WDH and then take 3 passes at a CAT scale to make sure.

Thanks guys,

Can anybody give me a basic or simple formula to know how close I am to the limit? I actually came across one today that wanted to know the weight of the rear axle, not the GAWR, the actual physical weight of the axle assembly. That was a new one...

Expect the tongue weight to be higher than the advertised number, particularly once you fill the trailer with your stuff, the tanks with propane, water, etc. Even a pair of good deep cycle batteries could add almost one hundred pounds to the tare number.

Also you cannot go by the wight of your truck from Toyota, you must load it the way you will be when towing and then go to a scale, the factory numbers are rarely if ever close.

Well, if the curb weight is anywhere close, you have 2000 lbs of payload, less the tongue weight (615) leaving 1385 for passengers and stuff in the truck itself. I think you are ok, but would be careful about how much extra stuff you take till you've made a trip or two.
Firewood, extra water, etc., can really add up fast.

Its likely the Tundra does not have 2,000 pounds of payload. That much payload in a 1/2 ton is reserved for max tow packages.

You will probably be OK, but I don't know how comfortable it will be towing a 28 and 1/2 trailer with that truck.
There seems to be some cherry picking of numbers here. First of all your GCWR is 16,000 # and you can tow 10,100#, but that's if your truck fully loaded including tongue weight is under 5,900#, otherwise you'll exceed the GCWR. That 615#(or 12%) tongue weight sounds like it's for an empty 4,988# trailer. If your trailer was loaded to the full 7,200# GVWR the tongue weight would probably be around 900# (12%). Your actual tongue weight should be somewhere between those two numbers.
Looking at it another way if your TV was loaded to the full GVWR of 7,200#, you still would be able (by the numbers) to tow 8,800#, before reaching your GCWR. That 8,800# is obviously well above the 7,200# GVWR you're talking about.
Again, it works by the numbers, but see if you can actually test tow it before buying.

Well, I may have a bigger problem that I just realized. Toyota sent me a notice that modifications made to my truck reduced the "cargo capacity" of my truck by 395 pounds. I am waiting to hear from Toyota what this means, b/c I never changed anything after I bought it. But if it involves the GVWR, my 7200 just went down to 6805. Minus what I've been told is a 5395 curb weight, I'm down to 1410. Minus the 615lbs tongue weight, I'm down to 795. Take away 75 pounds (guessing) for the WDH and receiver, I'm at 720. Minus me, the wife, and kids (510 for all of us), and I'm at 210. And that's without anything else in it. Is this cutting it too close?

Am I missing something here? It doesn't make sense that a 1/2 ton truck with a relatively stout towing package would basically hold just 2 adults, two kids, and 615 lbs at the rear with only a couple hundred pounds to spare.

It could also be that your GVWR will still be 7,200#, but your trucks weighs 395# more than stated. Chances are very good the tongue weight will be more than 615#.
To find out what your truck really weighs just go to
CAT Scale Locator | CAT Scale
or some other scale.
In your first post you thought your truck weighed around 5,200#, now you're saying it's 5,395# - go find out for sure what it weighs.
Regardless, whatever your truck weighs, even if it's around 5,600#, assuming the 7,200# is the correct GVWR, that still leaves a difference of 1,600#. I don't know what capacity you're expecting to have in a 1/2 ton truck. How you use that capacity is up to you.

Dave - take Mich F's advice and drive the wife and kids over to a scale and get a definite number. CAT scales are VERY easy, especially on Sunday, and you will get some very cheap peace of mind.

A WDH will move a little tongue weight back to the trailer axles. That's not their true purpose though.
