I'll be pulling a 40 ft. Toy hauler, fifth wheel. Triple axle. I believe it weighs a little over 17,000 lbs. I know there will be different opinions but I would like to hear both sides. I'm leaning towards a drw due to the fact that it has two extra tires which would be inherently a safer ride if I happened to have a rear blow out. Second, a larger foot print to eliminate excessive road walk. That's really all I'm going on. Please elaborate if you think of anything else. Thanks

I would say you're leaning in the right direction, and one of the primary reasons is that with a rig that size & weight you'd be exceeding the GVWR of any SRW pickup.

You rarely hear a DRW driver saw "I wish I had bought an SRW instead"...
So far, there have been some good thoughts and points made..

What follows is my experience and my opinion to add to those.
The DRW trucks are inherently more stable due to their footprint and base suspension being more substantial (rear sway bar on every DRW I have ever seen/owned).
The DRW will have a higher towing capacity than an SRW which would give you more of a safety margin.

i've towed my almost 18k Toy Hauler in some pretty stiff crosswinds without having a death grip on the steering wheel. I'm happy with my choice..

Yeah, going that heavy go with the DRW, the stability will be well worth it.

I'll tel you a quick story.
The family and I were on our way home from Ohiopyle Pa. heading east on rt. 68. I was driving a 2006 SRW F350 w/6.0 towing a 42'Titanium ToyHauler. This section of 68(sidling hill) has a very steep grade, the weather conditions were bad with pouring down rain. A women in a white Honda decided to jump in front of us and slam on her brakes while we were in a sharp turn and no one else on the road.
Needless to say I had to slam on my brakes to keep from hitting her, the rear of the truck let lose and we began to jack knife, I hit the trailer brake controller to regain control of the rig and all was good but the wife was very shook up.
She ask me what could I do to fix this from happing again, I said get a Dully, she said I think its time for you to get a Dully.
The following week she came home and said there a nice Dully at the Ford dealership used lot you need to see.
We now tow with a 2011 F350 DRW CC KR.
I will never go back.
Not trying to scare anyone but we can be the safest drivers but it's the morons that give us the most problems.

Get a DRW forget about a SRW.

Dually all the way. I towed a 15K+ Jayco Seismic toy hauler with tri axles and it handled beautifully.

I'm another one that started out with a 3500 SRW, pulling an 18K triple axle. I never wanted a DRW, because my truck was also my daily driver and work truck and I averaged about 35K per year. It only took one trip through a west Texas crosswind and I knew what I had to do. Traded for a 2013 F350 DRW and it was like night and day.

Remember that most manufacturers dry weights and pin weights do not include optional equipment like generators and extra AC's. My toy hauler came off the assembly line almost 1000 lbs heavier than the listed dry weight.

I would go with the DRW as well, however as I recall the statement that the DRW has a higher towing capacity may be incorrect. As I recall it is actually less by the amount of the weight of the extra wheels. I no longer own one so I can not go to the spec sheet to check my memory.

Sorry, DRW has much higher towing capacity. Using 2015 6.7L Ford F350 4x4 CC, 5th wheel towing, DRW 23500/GCWR 32100, SRW 15700/GCWR 23500. Also about 3K difference in payload.
