But the F-250 will still be overloaded over the GVWR of the tow vehicle when that trailer is loaded with the normal contents of an RV and the F-250 includes normal load of passenger(s). tools, full tank of diesel, etc. If you want me to believe any F-250 can tow a 42' trailer without being overloaded, show me the CAT scale ticket.

Welcome to the forum robcab,

Although I am very partial to my 7.3L crew cab for many different reasons, the Cummins engine just cannot be denied it's deserving props.

Smile tow truck

You didn't say what your 5'er weighed. If your up in the weight as I suspect you are, the Ram will pull it well. Only suggestion, even being diesel, would get as low of gear ratio as you can. Think, especially if you were to tow in the higher elevations and be towing somewhere around 14/15 k, you would be much happier with the lower gear and suspect mileage would increase. Think standard gear is a 3.43. Not sure what next step up is but think about 3.73. As for the 6.6' bed, my 2014/ 2500 has that bed and I mounted a B&W slider hitch. My 5'er is 36' length and 13k. It easily will back at near a 90 deg. angle without using the slider. As for hauling, I run slightly south of 3200 #pin weight not counting the hitch and 8k gen set in the bed. 2" drop is max fully loaded. You will do better considering getting a 3500.

I wouldn't trade a 3 yr old truck for a new one unless I was upgrading. And by upgrading I don't mean 300lbs of payload on the same truck like some on here get excited about. I mean going from an f-250 to an f-350 or 3500 DRW

The 250 is not enough for a RV that size the 3500 is a big step in the right direction.

Break out of the small truck mindset.

Go to the HDT section on the Escapees forum and get a HDT.

You won't be sorry and you'll save money over an F-550.

Tows like a dream and can hold all of our extra gear, bikes, smoker etc. Right now I have an opportunity to purchase a 2015 Dodge 3500. Both are diesel,4*4 singles. The Dodge only has a 6.5' bed which obviously means a shorter wheel base. So that is my first question. Do you all notice any significant difference in towing, handling etc? Thoughts comments?
Second question, Ford fans please don't hate. This baby is my 4th power stroke and 7 th Ford pick up. How do the Dodges compare?
The Ram with the 8' bed is available everywhere...Why would you even consider one with a 6.5' bed...Take yourself down to the Dodge dealer and get the Ram with the 8' bed and be done with it...

Hey it won't fit in the garage! It's hard to park! Short beds are cute! I like to have to deal with a slider hitch!

Amazing the excuses to not buy a "Standard Longbed" pickup truck!

Yes, it does fit in the garage and no I don't have a slider hitch. And it has all worked just fine since 1989. Maybe excuses to some people, but I've never found an excuse to justify a long bed. Really though, I think some of us are of a different mindset and neither is right or wrong.

To the OP, others are right, you are almost certainly exceeding the truck's GVWR. Depending on your state and how the truck is licensed, you may or may not be legal. If you are over the rear axle GAWR, then no doubt it is illegal. Certainly the truck handles the fiver fine, I've got a friend that is using an F250 SRW to tow a significantly heavier fiver than yours and he didn't know he was over the legal numbers.

Tough decision to replace a 3 yr old truck. I tend to keep trucks for about 10 yrs. And while I can't comment on either brand, I like the firmer ride of my new 3500 compared to my old 2500HD with air bags.

Did everyone miss that he corrected the length to 37'? Still a lot of trailer for a 250, but much better than 42'...

Just amazes me how someone tows his camper for years trouble free and enjoyable towing why people state he is towing with wrong truck. Bet if you check out his bearings/axles ratings he is good. Springs and tires are likely close or over specs. That is easily corrected. I seen several cabs crushed on back corners with short beds though.

Robcap, as far as the bed length goes. Most newer fivers do not need a slider hitch with a shortbed truck. I made the mistake of buying a slider hitch for my last pickup and used it once before I realized it was completely unnecessary. The sliders cost more, weigh more and take up more space.
After a year pulling with a gas powered pickup I upgraded to a diesel which is a great improvement. I also went to an 8' bed, big mistake in my opinion. I don't notice any difference in the ride with the longer wheelbase, I'm sure some do but for me I don't. The advantage of an 8' bed is you can fit a full sheet of plywood in the bed, I am a general contractor and it's not not worth it for even for that purpose. In my opinion, go for the shortbed. It's much more convenient 99% of the time
