Tow vehicle
Does anyone know or have any experience with an gmc envoy. I'm going to look at one this weekend end for a tow vehicle. It is a 2004 gmc envoy v8 4×4.

REMCO says it is towable as is with no restrictions but check the manual for the final word.
Store : Remco

Is this vehicle to tow with or to be towed?

Since we are in TT forum, I'm guessing it will the tow vehicle.
I guess it would be ok for a pop-up, hybrid or very small TT (under 20') IF the transmission is in good shape. Brakes should be in good shape, too.
The 4sp automatic will never get out of 3rd when towing, so mpg on that v8 will be poor.

I know a couple that tow a Trail Manor with their 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. They have been to Alaska and back. I think they did have transmission trouble when they first got it though. But it is a nice trailer.

In general, if you're looking for a good 1/2 ton tow vehicle, steer clear of 4X4's or top of the line trims. Both eat up the payload. Also, SUVs will have squishier suspension, which is not ideal for towing. Trucks are a better option unless you have a really good reason to stick with an SUV (and then know you will be making trade-offs).

Tow vehicle
Having towed a 19 foot Roo hybrid with a Chevy trailblazer (same as an envoy), I would recommend against it. Not bad on the flats but we just about rolled backwards down a few hills going through the letchworth park area!

The VW Touareg are excellent tow vehicles.
The early V6s are a little low on power but the V8s are beasts and the later V6s are very good.

Look for a nice Excursion with a V10 gas or Powerstroke Diesel. They are very capable tow vehicles and have tons of room inside.

I have personally towed with the exact vehicle you were looking at if that's the size SUV you want to use. Plenty of power for the 4400lb 25ft TT. Got about 11mpg doing so and could maintain 60mph no problems. The only problem is the short wheelbase. Caused too much sway so I bought a suburban and the difference was astounding. However, I did not have the best or maybe even good weight distribution hitch and sway control. IF Maybe I had an equalizer like I do now for our 35ft TT it MAY have been a perfect setup but I was fairly new to the RV community at the time. The longer the wheelbase you can find though the better off you'll be. Also just in case you're wondering, the mpg unloaded and towing was the exact same between the V8 envoy and the V8 suburban of the same year.
