Tow vehicle

We just purchased a 2023 Jayco White Hawk 26fk approximate weight fully loaded about 11k lbs. We will pull it with a 2023 Chevy Silverado 2.8 ltr 4-cylinder turbo. It seems to pull the weight fine on Long Island, but my concern is pulling it up higher terrain. Any advice or experience would be appreciated.

What is that truck rated to pull? My 2022 Sierra 1500 Denali with 6.2L is only rated for 7,800 pounds.

First piece of advice would be check the truck door sticker for payload. Subtract the tongue weight of the trailer and decide if you need to leave wife at home.

A 2023 Chevy Silverado 2.8L wasn't an available engine option per GM websites.

The Chevy Colorado had the 2.8L engine option back in 2022. Are you towing 11K lbs with a Colorado?

Wuut...that 6.2 must have the 2-speed PowerGlide behind it!

Maybe the OP was a troll post?

Seriously, the little 4 banger turbos have great power, but who would tow an 11K TT with a 1500, while overworking a small displacement engine?

Where to start?

- a Jayco White Hawk 26FK has a GVWR of 8,400 lbs, not 11K......is that total load including "stuff" in the truck bed or???

https://www.jayco.com/rvs/travel-tra...ite-hawk/26fk/

- Chevy lists a 2.7 liter 4cyl turbo in the 1500 with a max tow rating of 8,900 - 9,200 depending on configuration; cab/bed/2wd vs. 4wd, etc. although you need to realize that the advertised "max tow" rating is mostly fluff as most trucks run out of available payload/GVWR and GAWR before getting anywhere close to that number. .....check your payload sticker to start with. https://www.chevrolet.com/content/da...-eBrochure.pdf I'd note that GM excludes the "turbomax" from their "max tow" package.

I guess a bit of good news is that the "turbomax" has decent power; 310hp/420 ft lbs and that being a turbo, it's less affected by altitude than a naturally aspirated engine......not sure how long it would last under heavy towing use or how hot it would get though.

An 8,400lb, 32'1" long trailer is well beyond what I'd consider a good match for a well equipped half ton truck and a 4cyl turbo isn't what I'd call "well equipped" for towing.

Here's a rule of thumb for trailer length vs. tow vehicle wheelbase to consider as well; https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=...AAAAAdAAAAABAE

Good luck,

Dave

Has the 10 speed. Really tall gearing. Towing package with all the coolers and all. This is a sporty overgrown station wagon especially with the full cap. I'm guessing part of the limit is the fancy adaptive suspension. It is perfect for how I use it. Commuting and high speed NY to Florida runs. Excellent fuel economy for what it is. Lifetime MPG at 54K miles is 18.7.

According to Jayco, the GVWR on that model is 8500 lbs. Per Car and Driver, the tow rating on the 4-cyl. turbo engine is 9500 lbs. The good new is the payload is listed at 1870 to 2280 lbs. so the OPs actual payload is probably about 2000 lbs., but only getting the actual number off the drivers door will give an exact number.

15% of 8500 is 1275 lbs. is probably the max loaded tongue weight the OP will see. Subtract 100 lbs. for hitch weight and the OP should have about 625 lbs. of remaining cargo/payload for passenger and gear.

As for towing in higher terrain, the OP will probably need to slow down and downshift for upgrades and watch the temps. 35 - 40 mph while running in the 3.5k - 4.5k RPM range is what I would expect on +5% grades.

I'm gonna be a wise guy here----I think the Donner Party had a 2.8 turbo. And, they didn't even make it to the steep part.
Please, OP--I'm not being mean here, but the set up you're running isn't very safe or practical. By that, I mean the tow vehicle just isn't up to the safety standards for your family and the folks around you.
I tow a maximum 9995 lb trailer with a 3/4 ton with the right hitch set up and I consider I'm pretty much at max for safe towing.

Cool Towing Capacity

Keep Your Daydream has a You Tube channel and he does a great informational video on all aspects of towing GVWR, GAWR etc. They also include a link to a downloadable spreadsheet where you put in your truck and RV info as well as passenger/payload weights and it will calculate your tow capacity
